The decision of referee Howard Webb to hang up his whistle was greeted with the predictable slew of jokes about his long and illustrious career.

[WEBB QUITS REFEREEING AT 43]

Webb, who refereed the 2010 World Cup final and was a key official at this summer's tournament, has something of an unfair reputation for favouring Manchester United, with many fans convinced that he was somehow on their payroll.

While much of this reaction falls under the umbrella of ‘banter’, fans of United’s main rivals often express conviction that Webb favoured the Reds.

So, here are some of the most amusing reactions to Webb’s decision to quit the beautiful game…

Earlier we intimated that Webb’s pro-United reputation was somewhat uncalled for.

Indeed, it is also directly contradicted by the facts. While United’s record in the last five years was good with Webb as referee (an average of 1.85 points per game), it was by no means the best. The accolade of team (statistically) most favoured by Mr Webb goes to… Manchester City.

Yes, City. You couldn’t make it up. And, for good measure, the second 'most favoured' team is Arsenal, who were United's main rivals before Chelsea and City came on the scene.

Although, given Liverpool’s appalling record with Webb in the middle (0.89), and Everton’s strong tally of 1.5, maybe it’s not actually that he favoured any one team, if you get the drift?
