Sport has a strange way of influencing baby names, as anyone who read the '10 strangest sport star baby names' can testify.

Indeed, only in January a baby in the States was named Cydnee Leigh 12th Mann in honour of the Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks' fan club.

During the last World Cup in South Africa, one baby girl was named 'FIFA' (all in capitals) after the sport's governing body, while another was called 'Ke Nako', a World Cup slogan that meant 'it is time'.

Another couple in Bloemfontein had twin boys during the opening match between South Africa and Mexico and decided to name their kids after the two teams playing.

Then, in 2011, there was the baby named after fourteen members of the Burnley football team; while earlier this month, the Newcastle Chronicle caught up with a Newcastle fan who named her son 'Cole' back in 1995 only to see him sold to Manchester United a couple of months later.

But in this latest case, a couple have come up with a much more cunning 'bigger picture' plan for an outcome they are hoping will be related to their child's name.

A Cologne supporting couple have named their baby after Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski. Why? Because it reflects their desperation to attract the Germany star back to their club.

Lukas Poldi was born this week with a name that has the clear intention of luring the forward, who left Cologne to join Arsenal two years ago, back to the club.

Speculation that the forward could move on in the summer - coupled with the fact that Cologne have clinched promotion back to the German top flight in impressive fashion - means a third stint at the RheinEnergieStadion is not as unlikely as it may have seemed.

So popular was Podolski at the returning Bundesliga outfit that fans will clearly go to extreme lengths to show their admiration for him in a bid to bringing about his return.

Well, it may even turn out to be a winning ploy from little Lukas's parents, with Podolski posting an image of the Poldis on his Facebook page, commenting "great story".

Who knows, it may yet turn out to be a stupendous piece of tapping up from the couple with Podolski having been out of favour at the Emirates Stadium for much of the season and the summer transfer window looming.
