Gambler wins £25,000 with ancient McIlroy bet

A shrewd golfer
scooped an astonishing £25,000 from a £50 bet placed nearly a decade ago
thanks to Rory McIlroy's eight-shot victory at the US Open on Sunday.

The man played
a round of golf with McIlroy while he was an unknown kid at Holywood golf club
near Belfast, and was so amazed by the teenager's talent that he immediately went
to the bookies to bet that the lad would one day win a Major championship.

The gambler
- who has remained anonymous since his windfall - placed £50 at odds of 500-1
that McIlroy would win one of golf's top four titles before the age of 25. McIlroy duly obliged by romping home at Congressional this weekend aged just 22
years and one month.

And if golf's
newest superstar continues his great form at The Open Championship at
Royal St George's next month, his dad Gerry (pictured, below left, with Rory) and his friends could also take the
bookies to the cleaners. A while after the first bet, with Rory now 15, the
golfer's father and three of his friends decided to place a similar bet
themselves.

bookies had cut the odds slightly on a player with a growing reputation, but Gerry and his three pals were still all given
the chance to place £100 each at 500-1 that Rory would win The Open before
turning 25.

Should he win this year, or at Royal Lytham in 2012 or Muirfield in 2013,
the quartet will win a total of £200,000.

"That was all the bookies would let us put on, £100 apiece," said Gerry. "But that bet is looking better and better."

Having said
that, if Rory wins then we doubt his dad would really need the money: Rory picked
up a cool £778,450 for winning the US Open on Sunday, and he will scoop a
further £850,000 should he win in Kent. That would be over £1.6 million in just
over a month; surely he'd be able to lend his old man a few quid?
