Today at the Olympics – Day 2

Rebecca Adlington stars in the pool

DON'T MISS

Rebecca Adlington begins the defence of her two Olympic titles in the 400m freestyle final. After the disappointment of Sunday's road race cycling, the pressure on the 23-year-old has ratcheted up another notch in front of an expectant home crowd. Jo Jackson bids for a medal in the same event. Later on, Michael Phelps looks for his first medal of 2012 in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay.

Adlington's main rivals: Francesca Pellegrini (Italy), Camille Muffat

Swimming - Finals from 19:30

BIG NAMES IN ACTION

It has been billed as the best USA basketball team since the original Dream Team in 1992, but the tournament favourites have suffered a spate of injuries ruling out the likes of Dwyane Wade, Derrick Rose, Chris Bosh and Dwight Howard. Nonetheless, a team featuring LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant should make short work of a decent French team featuring an all-NBA starting five.

Basketball - USA v France 14:30

ESSENTIAL VIEWING

Archery is a surprisingly riveting sport to watch. Tension always runs high and the magnificent setting of Lord's Cricket Ground adds another dimension. Britain go into the women's team final as 66/1 outsiders, with the South Koreans the team to beat.

WATER-COOLER TOPIC

Olympic organisers have begun an urgent investigation into the empty seats at venues across the first day of the Games in London. It appeared that the more expensive seats at several venues, including Wimbledon, Earl's Court for the volleyball, and gymnastics at the North Greenwich Arena, were empty throughout the day.

THE LONDON 2012 VIBE

Chastened. It turns out that winning Olympic medals isn't as easy as just turning up. This is no criticism of the British athletes, but of a public that assumed Mark Cavendish's road race was pretty much guaranteed. Sadly, it's not that simple.

FRONT PAGE OF THE DAY

An eye-catching visual from The Observer, which devotes its front page to a massive underwater shot of Michael Phelps.

LONDON WEATHER FORECAST

A typical English summer's day, featuring spells of sun and rain. Top temperature a relatively chilly 18°C
