The 26-year-old German has risen rapidly through the ranks since claiming the junior world title and looks on course to add the senior title too on home soil.

Machata, along with Richard Adjei, Andreas Bredau and Christian Poser, are top of the pile after the first two runs, clocking a combined time of 1:37.44 minutes.

But that wasn’t all the home crowd had to cheer about with another Germany bob, piloted by 2010 Winter Olympian Karl Angerer, in second, just 0.22 seconds behind his compatriot.

Alexandr Zubkov, who became the first ever Russian two-man bob world champion already in Germany, is in third at the halfway stage with a time of 1:37.78 minutes.

Meanwhile, John Jackson’s British bobsled sits in 23rd going into the final two runs, clocking a time of 1:39.12 minutes.
