6-4 -
GAME, SET, AND MATCH ROGER FEDERER: As Federer gets to MATCH POINT the crowd really gets behind big Marat. Federer only needs one, though, bossing a lovely baseline rally before drilling the backhand winner across court after the let cord from the Russian. Marat gives Federer a big smile and an equally big hug at the net, offering his opponent total respect after that 6-3 7-6 6-4 mauling. BRING ON RAFA!
5-4 - First smashed racket of the day from Marat! He refused to change the racket and take the penalty, though there was a definite crack in it. Federer holds to 15 and on Safin's way to the chair he smashes it against the chair cleanly. The umpire gives him a code violation in the end, and doe so as gingerly as possible.
4-4 - STATSHOT: 26 aces and no double faults between these two men. Federer hits that spectacular forehand runner we were talking about right into the corner of the court. Safin still holds to 15. Can anyone say third set tie-break?
4-3 - Federer back into first-set service mode where he was nearly untouchable. The Swiss holds to LOVE.
3-3 - Federer running around the court like a madman, nearly makes a spectacular running forehand pass but is just long. He simply expects to make what for others is an impossible shot with relative ease and is disappointed when he does not. Safin holds to 15 with a service winner down the T.
3-2 - Safin is in disbelief at Federer's forehand winner down the line after a stupendous shot into the corner from the Russian. The Swiss holds to 30 and leads 3-2 in the third.
2-2 - Marat comes through the hold with a couple of big service winners in the end.
40-40 - Safin saves a critical BREAK POINT with the service winner.
40-40 - More shrugs and more talking to himself from Marat as he allows Federer back to DEUCE with an unforced error. That's the stuff we know and love.
2-1 - As Federer gets to 40-0, Safin shrugs and then lets out that massive Charlie Brown-esque "ARGHHHHHH!!!" we've been waiting for. An effortless volley winner and Federer holds to LOVE.
1-1 - Safin powers through the LOVE-Service game. Why couldn't he do that in the breaker?
1-0 - All of that being said, Federer again holds with ease, to 30 this time, to start off the third set.

Jay, however, has this to say: "I'll be surprised if Federer wins in straight sets. Like i said before, when Safin rises to the occasion, he can definitely beat any of the top 3. If he didn't have as many injury problems and had a stronger mentality then he'd easily be a top 5 player."

ROB in RUSSIA has some interesting, if confusing, words for Ralph: "Ralphy had 3 eggs instead of 2 this morning - ignore him. The Fed is maintaining the interest Rate before giving us a nice CUT and an INSIDE BREAK and as much as my home fans love the MAT - he aint got the puff and steam to dispense with the FED. MAT will fold to 6-0 in the third and another 3 brocken smassssssssssssssssssed raquets." The egg thing must be a Russian thing.
7-6 -
Federer takes it in the end 6-3 with a service winner. The top seed leads two sets to LOVE and does not look likely to drop a set today.
TB2-6 - Federer gets to four SET POINTS with a wonderful forehand winner down the line that inspires a "COME ON!" from the normally stoic world number one
TB1-5 - After another pathetic backhand approach into the net, Safin gets on the scoreboard with a big overhead smash. He still needs three mini-breaks to win this tie-break at the change of ends.
TB0-3 - Safin drops his first point horribly with a sad backhand approach into the net. Federer already in total control of the breaker.
6-6 -
TIE BREAK TIME!! A fourth LOVE-Service game heading into this breaker means one mini-break could do it. Safin will serve first.
5-6 - A lovely backhand slice volley completely wrong-foots Federer and Safin throws down the gauntlet with his own hold to LOVE. Each man has one challenge left now.
5-5 - Federer has no intention of losing this set on serve. He rushes through the hold to LOVE.
4-5 - A comfortable hold to 15 for Safin. Federer will serve to stay in the second set.
4-4 - Safin has lost a second challenge on a serve that was about 15 centimetres in. The world number one easily wraps up the hold to 30.
30-30 - Safin sees the serve-and-volley and hits a very low return to force Federer into the net. Smart play. He then gets to 30-30 by pressing the Swiss into another error.
3-4 - A couple of very fine points and another very fine hold of serve for the Russian.... To quote Ralph R, "have we got a match on our hands?"
40-40 - Marat is now forced to save his own BREAK POINT. Which he does with an ace out wide. At least after earning a few BREAK POINTS of his own Safin can start to feel like Federer is NOT invincible on serve. DEUCE.
3-3 - Federer back into comfort zone. Holds to 15.

If you're bored by our game-by-game comments you can click on Simon Reed's preview on our tennis page because "ralph r" is giving his own little running commentary on how this match is going. Here's what he said at the start of the set: "first three games of 2nd set much tighter, we could have a real dog fight on our hand. WOOF WOOF" To get involved either click on the story and respond to the thread or email me at jstahl@eurosport.com.
2-3 - A strong hold to 15 for Marat Safin. The Russian looking much, much better.
2-2 - Federer survives with a couple of huge first serves, but that was an encouraging return game for the Russian.
40-40 - A second BREAK POINT for big Marat after Federer is forced off of the court by an off-balance return from the Russian. But again Federer saves after a meek return of serve. DEUCE.
40-40 - Safin goes up 30-15 on Federer's serve to take a lead on the Swiss's serve for the first time this match. Federer responds with a gorgeous forehand winner down the line. But he then hits a backhand error into the net to give the Russian his first BREAK POINT chance!! Federer dominates the next point to save at the net.
1-2 - Safin holds to 30 and the crowd is pleased that he has been at least putting up a fight on serve since dropping serve early in the first set. Federer still in control, though there's a slim chance that this match could turn on it's head with one Safin break.

Simon Reed made a fairly standard prediction for todayÂ’s semi-finals (Federer and Nadal to win with ease). Our head commentator's thoughts on the first semi: "Marat Safin's done really well, and he played superbly against Novak Djokovic, but I just can't see him getting past Federer. Three years ago he survived a match point when the pair played out a fantastic semi-final in Melbourne, and went on to win the Australian Open. After that he disappeared into the wilderness, but he's fought his way back. Federer is in another league, however, and I expect him to stroll through in straight sets."
1-1 - At 40-0 Safin hits a gorgeous backhand pass that just nicks the line (the original call is overturned by Hawk-Eye - the Russian's third correct challenge out of three today). Federer still holds to 15 on the subsequent point with another ace out wide.
0-1 - While that first set took less than 30 minutes, Marat Safin is serving much better now and he finishes off a hold to 15 with a huge ace down the T.

MARAT SAFIN'S ROUTE TO THE SEMI-FINALS: 1st round bt Fabio Fognini 6-1 6-2 7-6, 2nd round bt Novak Djokovic 4-6 6-7 2-6, 3rd round bt Andreas Seppi 7-6 3-6 7-6 6-4, 4th round bt Stanislas Warinka 6-4 6-3 5-7 6-1, quarter-finals bt Feliciano Lopez 3-6 7-5 7-6 6-3.
6-3 -
And of course it goes to Federer. The Swiss creates a SET POINT with a gorgeous ace out wide, his third, and then wraps up the hold with a service winner. It's difficult to imagine anyone beating Federer when he's serving like this, save for possibly Rafael Nadal.
30-30 - Despite some overly defensive volleying, Safin gets to 30 on his rival's serve for the first time in the opening set. The Russian is two points away from the BREAK while the Swiss is two away from the set.
5-3 - Safin holds to 15 with some big first serves and a fine serve-and-volley. Still, Federer will serve for the opening having dropped just two points on serve so far this match. The crowd starting to get behind the Russian a bit.

ROGER FEDERER'S ROUTE TO THE SEMI-FINALS: 1st round bt Dominik Hrbaty 6-3 6-2 6-2, 2nd round bt Robin Söderling 6-3 6-4 7-6, 3rd round bt Marc Gicquel 6-3 6-3 6-1, 4th round bt Lleyton Hewitt 7-6 6-2 6-4, quarter-finals bt Mario Ancic 6-1 7-5 6-4.
5-2 - Safin starting to look far more at ease. Just as we say that he shanks a forehand horribly and shrugs in disbelief. Federer then hits the service winner to go up 40-15 before finishing off another hold to 15 with another service winner. Safin will serve to stay in the set.
4-2 - Safin hits his third ace to go up 40-0 then sets up the fly-swatter smash at the net with a nice-cut-volley to wrap up the LOVE-Service game after dominating a gorgeous baseline rally. A very good point and a very good game for the Russian, but we'll see if he can translate at all to the Swiss's service games.
4-1 - Federer rushes through another comfortable hold, though the Russian finally takes one point off of his serve. Safin slams his racket into the ground in trademark fashion and 14 minutes in this is still a one-way match.
3-1 - Much better from Safin, who gets on the scoreboard by wrapping up the hold to 30 with a service winner. If he is going to do anything in this match, one would think he has to blunt Federer's momentum straight away.
3-0 - Fderer swatting backhand winners with ease in the early going, earns another LOVE-Service game after the forehand error from the world number 75, and has yet to drop a point on serve. Safin already down 3-0 in just eight minutes of play.
2-0 -
Federer saves a GAME POINT with a dismissive return of serve winner, and then earns himself a second BREAK POINT. This time he collects with a stunning forehand winner down the line that Safin is just barely able to put his racket on. The world number one already in complete command.
40-40 - The big Russian, who did not sound super confident coming today, has already handed his rival an opening BREAK POINT with a long forehand error. Safin has to be relieved as he saves after Federer sends his own backhand error wide. DEUCE.
1-0 - Federer breezes through an opening LOVE-Service game firing his first ace in the process. An ominous start from the world number one.
0-0 - We're underway! Safin won the toss, and elected to receive. Federer serves first.
13:03 -
The two Grand Slam champions are out on Centre Court now and the weather, which had wreaked havoc the past couple of days, is looking good.
----- -
In the ten lifetime meetings between these two men, Federer has won eight including a 6-1 6-4 7-6(4) victory in the third round of Wimbledon last year and a 6-4 6-7(6) 6-4 win in the Halle final of 2005 in their only other meeting on grass. But their most memorable meeting was probably the one before that when Safin claimed an epic 5-7 6-4 5-7 7-6(6) 9-7 triumph in the 2005 Australian Open semi-finals.
