6-3 -
Rafa is not going to waste a second chance, however, and after some fabulous defence along the baseline by Nadal, Carlos Moya sends the approach shot with the forehand well wide. Nadal retains his world number two ranking for at least one more day closing out the 6-1 6-3 victory in one hour and 15 minutes. He will face Novak Djokovic in tomorrowÂ’s semi-finals in a match that will determine the world number two ranking.
40-40 - Moya drops a 40-0 lead after a string of errors, which Nadal obviously forced, and he is made to save a first MATCH POINT on serve with an absolutely brilliant angled backhand stretch volley drop shot for the winner at the net. Back to DEUCE.
5-3 - Moya wraps up the hold with the service winner and is one game away.
40-40 - At 30-15 down Nadal sets up an authoritative overhead smash, but Moya continues to press his compatriot's serve, setting up BREAK POINT... But Nadal easily saves after a tentative volley from Moya allows for an easy inside-out backhand pass. Back to DEUCE.
4-3 - A strong hold of serve from Moya, ten years Nadal's senior, should not be enough to save him now.
4-2 - An easy hold to 15 puts Nadal within two games of victory.
3-2 -
Nadal obviously still wants to turn in early, and he comes back from 40-0 down on Moya's serve to set up a BREAK POINT. And a second straight forehand error long by Moya hands Nadal a second break in this second set and for a second time this set an advantage.
2-2 -
Moya plays a fabulous point at the net to BREAK BACK and level! He's already won more points in this second set than he did in the first.
40-40 - A brilliant forehand winner up the line thanks to some fine instincts help the old-timer to his first BREAK POINT chance of the match. But Rafa saves with the drop and overhead for the winner in the open court. DEUCE.
2-1 - Nadal rushes around the court like a madman returning every single drop, every single volley, every single lob - save for one, which he somehow reaches and sends back up the line but just wide. The Mallorcan elder looks like he's going to finally take a game after going up 40-0. And Moya does finally get back on the scoreboard, holding on his third chance of the game.
2-0 - The 2007 runner-up Nadal holds to 15 to take his seventh straight game. No mercy being shown whatsoever.
1-0 -
Rafa rushes ahead 40-0 on his friend's serve, and then confirms another break on the second chance as Moya cannot handle the wicked Rafa topspin.
----- -
Carlos Moya won just ten points in that first set, which lasted just 25 minutes.
6-1 -
Nadal books a pair of SET POINTS and then confirms on his first chance with the perfect touch on the drop shot! The 21-year-old Spaniard looks set for a quick night.
5-1 -
A double break to Nadal, who takes this game to 15 after Moya looks very uncomfortable against a clearly superior opponent, means that Rafa will serve for the first set.
4-1 - Nadal eases ahead with another comfortable service hold. These two have had some classic encounters, including a 6-7 (3) 7-6 (8) 7-6 (1) match that went to Nadal in Chennai earlier this year, but it must be said that Rafa has not lost on clay to Moya since 2003, eased past him 6-4 6-3 6-0 the last time they played on clay at the 2007 French Open quarter-finals, and also crushed his friend 7-5 6-4 in their only other Hamburg meeting when Rafa was a ripe 16-years of age.
3-1 -
After Rafa rushes ahead 40-0, Moya saves a pair of BREAK POINTS but cannot save a third chipping the drop shot wide to gift his friend the advantage.
2-1 - Nadal closes out the LOVE game with an imposing series of groundstrokes.... ItÂ’s nearly impossible, if not impossible, to beat the man who may be the greatest claycourter in the history of the game when heÂ’s playing like this on clay.
1-1 - A very good opening hold to 15 for Moya as well.
1-0 - Absolute genius from the world number two who puts the forehand winner in the perfect place to hold to 30. Rafa has come out to play today.
