Superbike - 'Fine' Checa leaves hospital

Carlos Checa has said he feels "fine" after leaving hospital following a spectacular crash at the season-opening World Superbike race at Phillip Island.

The Spaniard was catapulted off his bike after over-braking and colliding with Marco Melandri on lap 13 of the first race in Australia.

Checa was knocked unconscious in the accident and taken straight to hospital, but checks revealed no serious damage.

“Leaving the hospital few hours ago, was big impact in head likely I'm fine. As well sorry for Marco I couldn't avoid. Thanks 4 the support”, the Alstare Ducati rider wrote on his Twitter page.

Checa had an eventful time Down Under: he missed the first two days of pre-season testing with a blocked intestine before he crashed in FP1 - a spill he labelled the biggest of his career.

Despite the mishap, he went on to claim pole position on the new Ducati 1199 R.
