    Seeds safely through in Halle

Sixth seed Marcel Granollers defeated Mischa Zverez of Germany 6-4 6-2 to move serenely into the second round of ATP Halle.

The Spaniard was utterly belligerent from the back of the court as he swept past the world number 190.

Granollers secured a straight-sets win without moving out of first gear, and his assured display makes him a dangerous opponent for the further rounds.

The number six seed will next take on another German, Tommy Haas, after Australia’s Bernard Tomic was forced to withdraw at 5-2 down in the opening set.

Tomic appeared to be really struggling on court as he left with Haas to face a tough challenge against Granollers in the second round.

Seventh seed Andreas Seppi was forced to work much harder as he overcame Radek Stepanek in three sets, 7-6(6) 4-6 7-6(7).

Stepanek gave his opponent a real scare after taking the second set and looking on course to take the match on a third-set breaker, but Seppi had other ideas.

The Italian won through with real composure at the death and will next take on Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, who beat Carlos Berlocq of Argentina in three sets, 6-3 3-6 7-5.

Seven-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal and world number three Roger Federer are headlining the tournament in preparation for Wimbledon.
