The 21-year-old was held by Northumbria Police after an allegation made by a woman at a hotel in Jesmond.
The alleged attack was reported on Thursday January 24 and is understood to have taken place in the early hours of that morning.
"On Thursday January 24 a woman reported to police that she had been raped overnight at a hotel in Jesmond,” a police spokeswoman said.
"A 21-year-old man has been arrested at an address in Forest Hall on suspicion of rape."
Ranger has only made two Premier League appearances this season, and spent part of last term on loan at Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday.
