Premier League - Giggs's 1,000 games in detail

Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs notched up his 1,000th career game when making an appearance against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

This remarkable feat only enhances his reputation as a model of longevity just days after it was announced that Giggs had signed a new contract to continue with United next season, when he will become 40.

The former Wales international is already the most decorated player in the history of English football and appears set to win another Premier League trophy at the very least this season.

That would take his tally of trophies to an astounding 23 - or 34 if you include Community Shields, Intercontinental Cups, Club World Cups and UEFA Super Cups.

And after becoming only the third living British outfield player to reach 1,000 appearances after Tony Ford and Graham Alexander, we thought it fit to delve deeper into a remarkable achievement that Sir Alex Ferguson says may never be reached again.

"To play 1,000 senior games is phenomenal. In the modern game it is unique. And I don't think it will be achieved again by anyone given the way that players' contracts are played out these days," said Ferguson.

The Welshman has certainly had a remarkable career...

Though tangible international success has always eluded him - the Olympics last summer representing his only taste of a major tournament - Giggs's record at Old Trafford has been unmatched.

He has played with some of the most talented players in the business for club and country since making his debut 22 years ago, and some lesser lights too.

Here we pick out the very best and worst of his team-mates down the years.

One of the more remarkable statistics from Giggs's career is that he is the only player to have scored in every season of Premier League football since the competition's inception back in 1992.

However, his goalscoring record extends beyond even that date for United. Here we run down his season-by-season goal record for the club in all competitions.

Giggs's has been one of the great football careers, and there could yet be plenty of achievements ahead of him.

Will Giggs's career record ever be matched? Let us know in the comments below.
