Atletico Madrid’s Champions League hangover was brutally exposed by Osasuna, who beat Diego Simeone’s side 3-0 in Pamplona.
The result leaves Atleti three points adrift of leaders Real Madrid ahead of the pivotal derby against Carlo Ancelotti’s men next week. However, the full damage of the loss is somewhat mitigated by the fact that Barcelona also suffered defeat at Sociedad.
Osasuna too a surprise lead just six minutes into the game, with Alvaro Cejudo arriving unmarked at the back post to volley home under no pressure from a corner.
And the home side doubled their advantage after 21 minutes when Emiliano Armenteros fired high into the net from the best part of 20 yards, giving Osasuna a 2-0 lead.
But things got even better for Osasuna just before the break, when Roberto Torres ghosted into the box to finish at the near post from a square cross into the box.
Simeone attempted to turn things around by introducing Koke, Arda Turan and Raul Garcia in the second half but Osasuna retained their control of the game and saw out an impressive 3-0 win.
6’ - GOAL: Wow! It's the home side that takes the lead. Osasuna play a deep corner to the back post where Cejudo is unmarked and he volleys into the net under no pressure!
21’ - GOAL: Oh my word! What a strike! Armenteros picks up the ball 20 yards out and smashes a strike high into the net! Courtois had no chance.
41’ - GOAL: Unbelievable! Torres nips in at the front post to head home from a cross squared into the box from the byline. Osasuna deserve this as well!
45’ - CHANGE: Indeed Simeone takes off Suarez and replaces him with Koke. Suarez came close to actually being shown a second yellow card in the first half. I'm not surprised that he has been taken off at the break.
57’ - CLOSE: Very close to a bizarre own goal! The cross comes into the box from Luis in the left back position but under no pressure Loties slice shis clearance and the ball flashes just past the far post. That was close!
Before tonight Atletico Madrid had won their last three visits to Pamplona in La Liga, keeping a clean sheet in each of their previous two.
Osasuna have now claimed five points from a possible nine against the top three sides in La Liga this season.
TALKING POINT – Could Atletico drop out the title race in the space of a week?
Next week’s derby against Real Madrid now takes on extra meaning for Atletico Madrid. Should they lose to their city rivals they would be six points off the top of La Liga. Would that be too big a gap to claw back in the title race?
MAN OF THE MATCH
Jordan Loties (Osasuna) - Although his attacking team-mates will take the headlines it was his organization and presence at the back that led Osasuna to shutout such a normally dangerous Atletico Madrid side. He had Costa in his proverbial back pocket!
