The pressure was on Adlington and Awiti-Alcaraz to deliver for Britain on the last day in Brazil as they took to the tatami in the +78kg and -100kg category respectively.
But they couldn't as Britain ended the World Championships empty-handed just over a year after claiming two medals at the London 2012 Olympics – Gemma Gibbons' silver and Karina Bryant's bronze.
Adlington, who took her first Grand Slam medal in Moscow in the +78kg category in July, was disqualified in her first-round clash with Eun-Kyung Kim of South Korea.
She was given her marching orders after receiving four shidos while being a yuko behind and Awiti-Alcaraz, on his world debut, lost to Martin Pacek of Sweden.
Having received a bye past the first round, the 20-year-old was thrown for ippon in the third minute by Pacek, which ended his maiden global gathering in Rio there and then.
