Last season the Brewers reached the play-off semi-finals on the back of one of the best home records in the country.
Summerfield said: "It's been at the back of our minds that it's been a while since we won at home because we obviously can't just rely on our away form.
"It was an ideal opportunity after such a good performance in winning at Chesterfield on Saturday."
"To be fair, Torquay have not had the best of times, but they came here and set themselves. They were really well organised and sat two people in front of the back four which was always going to make it difficult for us to play.
"We tried to miss out the midfield a little bit more in the second half and it worked a treat.
"Personally, I think Jimmy (Phillips) has got an awful lot to offer and we should be asking him to score more goals because he can shoot with both feet."
