India have come under severe criticism for their poor form recently, with fans and media pundits alike calling for change after they went 2-0 down to rivals Pakistan in their three-match ODI series.
Sehwag, whose record over the past year is well below his career mark, was left out of Sunday's third and final clash against Pakistan and although his replacement Ajinkya Rahane failed, the Indian bowlers secured a 10-run win.
The 34-year-old, still one of the world's most feared batsmen on his day, has now been ditched by the Indian selectors for the matches against England in Rajkot, Kochi and Ranchi.
Gautam Gambhir has been retained, while Mahendra Singh Dhoni continues as captain despite some suggestions his position was under review.
Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored 206 not out and 135 against England in the Test series, has been added to the squad in Sehwag's place. Ravinchandran Ashwin and Amit Mishra remain as the frontline spinners, with veteran Harbhajan Singh again missing out.
Shami Ahmed is also in the 14-man party after making his debut against Pakistan.
