Mumbai had two previous encounters with the Lions and went into both matches heavy favourites, but fell short on both occasions. That wasn’t the case this time, however.
Lions captain Alvaro Pietersen top-scored with 35 as Mumbai were set a very achievable score of 140 to chase. It didn’t start particularly well for the Indians as Sanchin Tendulkar was dismissed for just five runs off the bowling of Sohail Tanvir. Dwayne Smith remained solid at the crease, carrying his bat to knock an impressive 63 off 47 balls.
Dinesh Karhik and Rohit Sharma came and went for 13 and 20 runs respectively, but it was Kieron Pollard who combined well with Smith to see Mumbai over the line.
