Felton did not enter a plea in Manhattan Criminal Court on Tuesday afternoon and was released on $25,000 bail.
Felton was charged with one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and one count of criminal possession of a firearm. Each is considered a felony in New York state.
Prosecutors allege that the gun is an unregistered, Belgian-made semi-automatic pistol that was loaded with 18 rounds of ammunition, according to SI.com.
The 29-year-old Felton was questioned at the 20th precinct on the Upper West Side of Manhattan after turning himself in at 12:50 a.m. ET after his wife alleged that he threatened her.
According to the New York Post, an attorney for Ariane Raymondo-Felton came to the precinct before the Knicks-Dallas Mavericks game on Monday night to turn over a pistol. She later arrived at the station to made a statement to detectives, police said.
After the Knicks' loss to the Mavericks in Madison Square Garden, Felton came to the precinct with an attorney but made no statement. The Post reported that Felton had pointed a loaded gun at his wife.
Felton's estranged wife, a law student at Fordham University, recently filed for divorce. The Post reported that the semiautomatic handgun was left at her apartment. New York has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation.
