Brown has been an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs for the past seven years. He was the Spurs director of player development from 2002-06.
Brown was expected to be promoted to lead assistant for the Spurs after Mike Budenholzer left to coach the Atlanta Hawks earlier this summer.
David Vanterpool, Michael Curry, Jay Larranaga, Adrian Griffin and Kenny Atkinson were other candidates for the 76ers job.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has blasted Major League Baseball and commissioner Bud Selig for their treatment of New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez.
Cuban, appearing on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on Thursday, was highly critical of how the league and Selig have handled Rodriguez, who is fighting a 211-game suspension from the Biogenesis scandal.
"Horrible," Cuban said. "I think it's disgraceful what Major League Baseball is trying to do to him."

The Charlotte Bobcats have re-signed guard Jannero Pargo. Terms of the deal were not released.
Pargo joined the Bobcats on March 14, 2013, when he signed the first of two 10-day contracts. He then signed for the rest of the season on April 3. He played in 18 games for Charlotte, averaging 8.4 points.
