Live Commentary

  1. - So a great performance from James Toseland but the big story of the day is the speed of Casey Stoner on the day that Dani Pedrosa withdrew. He is sure to be second in the standings after tomorrow's race - remember to join us for that.

  2. - Well we are all done now - you can see the times to your right. Front row is Stoner-Rossi-Hayden. Second row is Lorenzo-TOSELAND-De Puniet and then on the third row it is Edwards-Vermeulen-Dovizioso.

  3. 1' Elias spins off on his final lap too.

  4. 1' Late lap from Rossi though is enough for him to just edge him back into second. The front row will be Stoner-Rossi-Hayden.

  5. 2' Huge late laps coming - Hayden up to second, Lorenzo third, AND TOSELAND FIFTH !!

  6. 3' Stoner comes out with what is believed to be his first lap with a qualifying lap and he produces a lap of...wait for it...1:20.700...stunning time.

  7. 5' Elias up to fifth with a lap of 1:21.999 and he was actually faster than Stoner in the first section there. He has never started a race better than 12th this year so great job from him.

  8. 6' Best laps from Rossi and Hayden in quick succession sees them get back onto the front row.

  9. 8' And he then goes faster again - 1:22.284 - puts him in seventh - great effort from the Sheffield man.

  10. 10' Toseland has just produced his best effort 1:22.538 - and that sees him sky up to eight.

  11. 11' Not that fast though - 1:22.173 - is only good enough for fifth.

  12. 13' Big laps from Spies, Hayden, Lorenzo - Rossi down to seventh but he is on a fast one now.

  13. 15' De Puniet has been getting faster and faster as the session has gone and he is now up to third ahead of Rossi with a lap of 1:22.051.

  14. 17' Hacking has been all over the place today (he even crashed on his Superbike earlier in the day) and he has just spun off again.

  15. 19' Faster laps coming in now - including from James Toseland who is up to ninth with an effort of 1:22.943

  16. 21' De Angelis now loses control and suffers a very bad crash - he looks to have hurt his wrist - two crashes in the space of a couple a minutes for San Carlo Honda team.

  17. 25' Nakano loses control of his front on turn three and slides off - his bike suffers lots of damage and lots of work will have to be done on that if it is to be used tomorrow.

  18. 26' Chris Vermeulen becomes only the second man of the weekend to crack 1:22 - a lap of 1:21.971 brings him up to second.

  19. 26' Rossi has just produced his best lap of the session - 1:22.354 - but it is still far behind Stoner.

  20. 28' Capirossi manages to get by far his best lap of the session - 1:23.031 - sees him jump from 16th up the seventh.

  21. 30' Six drivers now under 1:23 at the halfway stage - 1. Stoner, 2. Rossi, 3, Vermeulen, 4. Nakano, 5. Hayden, 6. De Puniet - Toseland way back in 15th and with work to do.

  22. 36' Britain's James Toseland has just produced his best lap - an effort of 1:23.495 but that is still only good enough for 12th.

  23. 37' Stoner has gone faster again - 1:21.374 - Rossi has also gone faster but he is still a full second behind Stoner.

  24. 39' And Stoner now with a lap of 1:21.414 !! That is the fastest lap we have seen all weekend.

  25. 41' Another blistering lap from Stoner - 1:21.515 - nobody other than Stoner has cracked 1:22 this weekend he is all set for pole.

  26. 43' Vermeulen jumps up the field with a fine lap of 1:22.995 that is good enough for third at the moment. Lorenzo is the fastest Michelin rider in sixth at the moment.

  27. 48' Rossi has become the second to go under 1:23 with a time of 1:22.556 but still Stoner looks by far the fastest round here.

  28. 52' Stoner getting faster and faster - 1:22.204 - and that is the only lap we have had so far that has cracked 1:23. Meanwhile Jamie Hacking has had a little spell in the gravel after losing control.

  29. 56' Early mark set by Casey Stoner who produces a lap of 1:23.112

  30. 60' And we are underway here...bright skies welcome the riders.

  31. - One of the big stories of this weekend has been the fact that Bridgestone have been so much faster than Michelin - Nicky Hayden has been the only one doing anything.

  32. - Casey Stoner was fastest this morning in free practice 3 ahead of championship leader Valentine Rossi. Those two know they have a big chance this weekend with Pedrosa out and Stoner really should be second by the end of the weekend.

  33. - Welcome to LIVE coverage of the qualifying for the American GP at Laguna Seca where the big news is that injured title contender Dani Pedrosa has withdrawn !!
