Live Commentary

  1. - Thank you for joining us today for a superb race. Lewis Hamilton tells the team on the radio: "Sorry for hitting the barrier, but I made up for it so let's go party tonight!" Not being on the guest list for any exclusive Mote Carlo nightspots, we will rejoin the F1 circuit in a fortnight in Canada. See you then.

  2. WIN! LEWIS HAMILTON WINS!!! A superb performance from the Briton, albeit with a little slice of luck. Second for Robert Kubica, with Felipe Massa third. Full results on the left.

  3. 1min Hamilton crosses the line with 38 seconds to go - he must complete this lap and that will be that.

  4. 3mins Hamilton continues to press on. He is still just about the fastest man on the track.

  5. 6mins The sun is out and the track is drying nicely. From scratch, Hamilton has built a four-second lead over Kubica and looks very comfortable.

  6. 8mins Raikkonen escapes and comes back out in ninth. He will probably miss out on the points, too, but it is such cruel luck on Adrian Sutil and Force India. In fairness to Raikkonen, he got out of shape coming out of the tunnel and couldn't right it - it wasn't a kamikaze overtaking manoeuvre.

  7. 10min OH NO!!! Raikkonen smashes into the back of Sutil !! Both cars have to come in, and it is the end of the Force India man's race. Terrible shame for Force India, Raikkonen you idiot.

  8. 65/78 Some classic French TV direction - a slow motion montage of cars with bits hanging off. Nice.

  9. 64/78 Rosberg's Williams is winched off as the safety car continues to lead the field round. The pit lane is now open should anyone feel the need to stop.

  10. 62/78 BIG CRASH! Nico Rosberg smashes into the barriers round the swimming pool section and leaves debris all over the track. He looks OK, but it brings the safety car out which is bad news for Lewis Hamilton.

  11. 59/78 You never want to say it's in the bag, especially on a damp track, but let's just say Hamilton looks good with a 39 second lead over Kubica.

  12. 57/78 Massa's intermediate tyres have gone right off, and he decides to cut his losses and change to dries. Kubica through to second!

  13. 56/78 Contact! Heikki Kovalainen tags the back of Button, who spins. The McLaren man is up to 11th but that move may land him in hot water.

  14. 55/78 HAMILTON PITS: He comes in, is fitted with dry tyres and comes back out IN THE LEAD!

  15. 54/78 Yet another spin for Timo Glock, who is pressing gamely on. In comes Sutil and he goes onto dry tyres.

  16. 53/78 The slicks-shod Alonso is going very quickly - you'd have to think Hamilton will opt for those. Although that said, Webber is absolutely floundering on 'slicks'.

  17. 51/78 Oh, cobblers. Hamilton loses two and a half seconds to Massa as he is caught up in traffic. The lead is still over 30 seconds though. And McLaren have sent out Kovalainen on dry tyres as a possible guinea pig for Hamilton. Cunning, although Kovalainen might not like it.

  18. 50/78 Well, that didn't take long. Piquet goes straight on at St Devote and his race is over.

  19. 48/78 Oh, look out. It's Nelson Piquet on dry tyres! Meanwhile, it looks as if time may have to be called on the race before 78 laps are up. We still have 30 to go and only 40 minutes.

  20. 46/78 Hamilton leads by 26 seconds and he surely must come in soon. A dramatic race here. Remember Massa will not pit again.

  21. 45/78 Nobody can decide what is going to happen with the weather, but Fernando Alonso has put on a set of dry tyres. Still very wet off line so he has to be very careful indeed.

  22. 43/78 Felipe Massa is in traffic and Hamilton will soon have enough of a cushion to get in and out of the pits while still in the lead.

  23. 41/78 Rain is expected in the next 10 minutes or so! And just as the track was drying out!

  24. 40/78 1:28.691 - fastest lap of the race by Hamilton. He is on the charge, but you have to wonder what might have been had he not stacked it into the barriers. Meanwhile, Giancarlo Fisichella is out.

  25. 38/78 Like the FA Cup and a cold Tuesday night at Rochdale, it appears that rain is a great leveller. Timo Glock spins! Button and Rosberg narrowly avoid collecting him.

  26. 37/78 Fastest lap for Adrian Sutil - 1:29.292. What a race for Force India.

  27. 35/78 Lewis Hamilton goes through to lap his compatriot Jenson Button. Meanwhile Heikki Kovalainen pits for the second time.

  28. 34/78 Lewis Hamilton now leads! He pitted very early, but the question is when he will have to come in - he has not yet refueled.

  29. 34/78 Race leader Felipe Massa pits! He exits on intermediate tyres and again looks dead set until the end of the race.

  30. 33/78 You can now see a dry racing line on parts of the track and the drivers are close to breaking the 1:30 mark.

  31. 31/58 Unbelievably, Adrian Sutil is fifth. What a result this could be for force India if he can keep this up.

  32. 30/58 The onboard cameras give a good idea of what the drivers can see in these conditions - nothing.

  33. 29/58 Raikkonen is fueled up and will try to go all the way to the finish from here.

  34. 28/58 Error by Raikkonen!! He runs wide and damages his front wing! Disaster for the Finn - he just went straight on at St Devote.

  35. 27/78 In comes race leader Robert Kubica, and he manages a fairly routine 8.7-second stop. He's on a two-stop strategy.

  36. 26/78 Blimey! We're 45 minutes in and there are still more than 50 laps to go. They could still be playing next Tuesday.

  37. 24/78 Poor old Nelson Piquet. He runs wide, allowing Kovalainen a free pass up the inside. He's not his dad.

  38. 22/78 Massa has regained his form with track conditions improving. He sets a fastest lap and is now within two seconds of race leader Robert Kubica.

  39. 21/78 Fastest lap for Nico Roseberg! 1:33.244, and these times will continue to fall as the conditions improve.

  40. 19/78 Robert Kubica leads and is stretching away from Massa - he sets the fastest lap of the race - a 1:34 with the track drying out somewhat.

  41. 18/78 Heidfeld is going backwards - obviously feeling the after effects of that shunt with Alonso - and he's coming into the pits.

  42. 17/78 MASSA OFF!! He runs wide at the end of the start-finish straight and Kubica comes through INTO THE LEAD!! Massa's Ferrari is undamaged and he returns to the track in second place.

  43. 16/78 Kimi Raikkonen has had to do a drive-through penalty as his tyres were fitted after the pre-race deadline! He is down to fourth.

  44. 15/78 Madness from Alonso - he was going so well on his full wet tyres but he has to come in for his third front wing of the race.

  45. 14/78 Alonso T-bones Heidfeld at the hairpin!! And the inevitable pile-up ensues!! What was Alonso doing?

  46. 12/78 Alonso overtakes Webber to go sixth. Hamilton is now up to fourth ahead of Heidfeld. The BMW man is struggling for grip.

  47. 11/78 Everyone is taking it very steadily - Massa is now lapping at 1:41.

  48. 10/78 The safety car peels back into the pits and we are racing again!

  49. 9/78 So, David Coulthard and Sebastien Boudais are out, but Alonso has rejoined with his suspension apparently undamaged.

  50. 8/78 Pile-up at Casino Square! Alonso hits the barriers, damaging his suspension, then Coulthard and Bourdais stack it into each other! Safety car out.

  51. 8/78 The field has spread out a lot, meaning Hamilton rejoined in fifth.

  52. 7/78 That Hamilton error sees Raikkonen go through to second with a charging Robert Kubica right on his tail in third. Disaster for Hamilton, and the rain continues to get heavier - the teams might think about changing to full wet tyres.

  53. 6/78 HAMILTON INTO THE BARRIERS!!! As the rain worsens, the Briton slides wide and smacks his right rear tyre on the wall. He comes in for a new tyre but is his suspension OK?

  54. 6/78 David Coulthard has done well. He was given a five-place penalty for changing his gearbox but has made all of that back and finds himself in 10th.

  55. 5/78 Timo Glock spins! He loses his front end but manages to keep the engine running and gets back on track for the loss of several places.

  56. 5/78 Nico Rosberg has to come in to fix his wing, which was hanging rather apologetically off.

  57. 4/78 The leaders are lapping at around one minute 37, over 20 seconds slower than in dry conditions. This could be a long one.

  58. 3/78 Massa has opened up a lead of maybe a second and a half over Hamilton. He's looking strong but this race has a long way to run.

  59. 2/78 Button into the pits! He runs into the back of Heidfeld and definitely loses his front wing. Silly...

  60. 1/78 Contact on the hairpin! Rosberg nudges into the back of Alonso on the hairpin and appears to have dislodged his front wing.

  61. 1/78 GOOOOOOO!!!! Hamilton sneaks up the inside of Raikkonen and takes second! Massa still leads though!

  62. 13:01 It would seem everyone is on intermediate tyres. Expect a load of early pit stops as the track dries out. McLaren are working away on Kovalainen's car and appear to have got it running, so he will at least start the race.

  63. 13:00 Off we go on the formation lap. Heikki Kovalainen stalls on the grid and he will have to start from the pit lane - disaster!

  64. 12:57 Fernando Alonso says over his team radio that he is happy with the tyres he has - presumably dry ones.

  65. 12:55 The starting grid is on your left - a Ferrari front row and a McLaren second row. The start is so crucial, given the almost complete lack of overtaking opportunities.

  66. 12:50 It continues to drizzle, but apparently this is as bad as it will get. The racing line should dry out quite quickly once the race gets under way - a really tough tyre decision.

  67. 12:40 With 20 minutes to go until the green light, there is an air of mild panic on the grid as rain starts to fall in Monte Carlo! It has been a mixed weekend, weatherwise, and this will play havoc with the teams' plans.
