Live Commentary

  1. - We're back at 1pm for what promises to be a tremendously significant qualifying session, given the near-impossibility of overtaking around Magny-Cours.

  2. 11:01 That's time, and it is a rare moment of glory for the young Brazilian who has found life in Formula One very tough. Mark Webber sneaks into second with Vettel third.

  3. 10:57 Hamilton goes over even more runoff area than usual, cutting off turn six altogether.

  4. 10:54 Nelson Piquet is still the man. Are Renault running with no petrol just to raise French spirits, or have they really got a chance? We'll find out in qualifying at 1pm.

  5. 10:48 David Coulthard runs too hot into Lycee, the final left-hander before the straight - and goes wide.

  6. 10:40 Nelson Piquet! 1:15.750, and he is fastest again! That is the second fastest lap of the weekend. Renault going well on home tarmac. It is a sunny day in central France, 24°C air temperature, 38°C on the track.

  7. 10:31 Seb Vettel runs wide on the big left-hander, imaginatively-titled '180°'. Other classic corners to look out for include 'Chicane' and 'Golf'.

  8. 10:29 Mark Webber is the only man without a hot lap to his name, although he has been out for a brief sighter.

  9. 10:26 Told you. Lewis Hamilton goes quickest with 1:16.182. He flies round using great swathes of run-off area and spending most of his lap on the green painted bits. Seems to work though.

  10. 10:25 Good times for Jon Symcox, author of our Fantasy F1 column. He tipped Nelson Piquet and blow me if the Brazilian isn't top of the time sheets. It won't last.

  11. 10:16 Sebastian Bourdais and Timo Glock are the first men to record hot laps. Glock's 1:17.197 is the best so far.

  12. 10:08 Well, you give teams the chance to drive around a track and then they can't even be bothered. Nobody on track. Cue many French-style cutaway shots of billowing flags and a massive camp site.

  13. 10:00 Welcome to LIVE coverage of free practice 3 for the French GP at Magny-Cours! One more hour of fine tuning to go before this afternoon's all-important qualifying session.
