Live Commentary

  1. - Join us tomorrow morning from 10:00 UK time for final practice before qualifying in the afternoon and the race on Sunday. Have an exciting evening!

  2. 14:30 As the second practice session comes to an end, Alonso it is who remains top on the home GP weekend for his team Renault. Massa is second, his Ferrari team-mate Raikkonen third and Briton Hamilton fourth in his McLaren. Kubica, the world championship leader who has suffered problems with his car today, eventually nets a creditable sixth spot behind Toro Rosso's Vettel.

  3. 14:24 Massa off again, doing brilliantly to avoid the tyre barrier as the Ferrari lurches towards it on a couple of occasions. Many of the top drivers struggling to remain on the track today.

  4. 14:21 Alonso sets the fastest time of this afternoon session - 1:15.778, .076 ahead of Massa - with seven minutes left to use. Hamilton up to fourth.

  5. 14:10 Hamilton seventh at present as Alonso displaces Vettel in third. The track temperature, fluctuating a fair bit, still in the 40s.

  6. 14:05 Alonso rides the kerb at the opening to the chicane and takes it too far across as he seeks to shoot through the second - finding the grass. The Renault doesn't like that much.

  7. 13:58 Sebastien Vettel third now, quicker than Kovalainen. These times are slower than this morning generally as the teams seek to test out tyres with heavier fuel on board.

  8. 13:45 Massa now on a 1:15.854, but soon after he runs across the grass and rejoins the track around the bend.

  9. 13:42 Kubica goes out briefly but returns soon after - he has all sorts of issues with the car: traction, engine misfiring... you name it, he's moaned about it. An early blow for him in France after taking the world championship lead last time out in Canada.

  10. 13:35 World champion Raikkonen (1:16.002) and Kovalainen - three-tenths off the pace - now leading the timesheets.

  11. 13:32 And now Hamilton flies off at that tricky Estoril turn three which has caused Alonso and Heikki Kovalainen trouble. He gets back on track easily enough.

  12. 13:26 Robert Kubica, winner in Montreal in the BMW, again having some difficulties with his car in the garage. It is up on the jacks and going nowhere soon.

  13. 13:25 Massa goes round faster than Hamilton in 1:16.359.

  14. 13:18 Alonso runs off after losing the car briefly, but gets out of the kitty litter to rejoin the track. He also had engine trouble towards the end of the first session.

  15. 13:10 Lewis Hamilton with a 1:16:500 to set an early pace from ex-team-mate Fernando Alonso.

  16. 13:05 The drivers are out with more haste compared with the morning run. Sebastien Bourdais the first to complete a lap.

  17. 13:00 The session begins. Ferrari's Felipe Massa was quickest in the first sesh by some distance, incidentally going faster than the race lap record.
