Live Commentary

  1. - That's the end of the session - quite an interesting one in the end given the treacherous conditions. We're back at 7pm for the second session from Montreal. Join us then!

  2. 16:29 Massive sideways moment for Hamilton! He manages to cling on and avoid a big spin. Meanwhile Felipe Massa goes fastest!

  3. 16:24 Bo! Raikkonen blows the field away with a 1:18. We have a dry track and five minutes remaining. And Jenson Button has gone off again.

  4. 16:13 Wow, what a belter from Timo Glock! 1:21.555 from the Toyota man and he is over a second and a half quicker than his team-mate Trulli. The next best, Vettel, is over four seconds adrift. Still no sign of either McLaren.

  5. 16:04 A very sideways Sebastian Vettel goes fastest! 1:25.711 his time and the Toro Rosso man is top of the pile.

  6. 15:55 Trulli's team tell him over the radio that they are preparing to transfer to dry tyres.

  7. 15:53 Jarno Trulli sets the fastest time of the day, a 1:25.884. A visible dry line is appearing so expect these lap times to keep tumbling - unless the rain starts again...

  8. 15:47 Kimi Raikkonen is the first of the 'big three' to come out. He has a lot to prove after failing to score in Monaco last fortnight.

  9. 15:37 Glock is all over the track, spending half of his lap around this street circuit going sideways. Well, you can't accuse him of not trying.

  10. 15:33 Kazuki Nakajima is the fastest man on track at the moment, having posted a 1:26.999.

  11. 15:25 The weather forecast says no rain for 25 minutes, but a 60 percent chance of further showers after that.

  12. 15:18 Nearly 20 minutes gone and still nobody has set a hot lap. The track is drying out and hopefully there should be more action shortly. Adrian Sutil is the only man on track, and you have to wonder why these sessions are an hour and a half long...

  13. 15:07 Timo Glock runs wide over the grass - it's treacherous out there. It rained earliet this morning and, although it has now stopped the track is very greasy.

  14. 15:00 Welcome to Montreal on a drizzly Friday! The first 90-minute free practice session is under way, with a few cars teetering round on intermediate tyres.
