Most footballers' pre-match fluids consist of brightly-coloured isotonic drinks washed down with spring water.
Not so Celta Vigo's Enrique De Lucas, whose choice of beverage was caught on cameras before Celta Vigo's game against Sevilla on Monday.
The Celta substitute sat on the bench cradling a plastic cup of beer. He later came on in the 75th minute of a heavy 4-1 defeat.
Strangely, Celta insisted De Lucas was indeed quaffing an energy drink.
Pitchside Europe is in no position to state definitively otherwise - but the tell-tale foam on the side of the cup looked like no energy drink we have ever seen.
Even if it were beer, it is worth pointing out that De Lucas may well have been supping a non-alcoholic brew such as Mahou Sin or San Miguel 0.0%, which are widely available at football stadia.
Certainly the midfielder, who counts Chelsea among his former clubs, was hardly shy about his actions, which would surely have landed him in some bother had it been full-strength.
As the excellent Dirty Tackle blog points out, Liverpool's Spanish goalkeeper Pepe Reina clashed with his countryman Rafa Benitez over a post-match tipple.
Reina wrote in his autobiography:
"We had lost 2-1 at Besiktas and not played too well. I decided to have a beer.
"I don't see a problem with that, because for me it is healthier to do that than it is to have a glass of Coca-Cola or a drink like that.
"Suddenly, the bartender turned up and said, 'The club doctor, the medical staff and the manager have made it clear to me that they do not want you to have a beer.'
"I asked Rafa what was going on and he said I was forbidden from having a beer.
"I still don't know why this was the case but, whatever the reason, I was fuming.
"I grabbed my bags and stormed off to my room without even having my dinner. That is how upset I was.
"For me, Rafa was in the wrong on that occasion. It suggests the manager does not trust you to look after yourself in the right way.
"As a player, you have to know when the time is right to relax and when it isn't, and I like to think that I have that balance."
And one of German football's most cherished rituals involves ale - at the end of each season, trophy winners douse each other with massive steins of the stuff.
