On Monday we told you about a jobsworth football referee whose antics raised a chuckle, after a non-league player was sent off for flashing his manhood having been asked to display underwear he had previously stated he was not wearing.
Today we bring an even worse example of fussy refereeing, from Venezuela of all places.
Rolando Escobar, a 31-year-old midfielder from Panama, turns out for Deportivo Anzoategui.
He was wearing his wedding ring, as some players insist on doing, but which is against the rules, as jewellery can result in serious injury.
But a frequent problem with wedding rings is how difficult they can be to remove after several years of wear. This was the case for Escobar, who could not get it off despite the help of officials and fellow players:
The logical solution – and one used all over the world – is to cover the offending item with sticky tape.
Common sense does not appear to be in this referee’s repertoire of officiousness though, and he instead forced Escobar to destroy the ring with a pair of pliers:
Excessive? We think so....and we dread to think what his wife said.
