Manchester United have apologised after publishing a Swastika-style insignia on a club email sent out to fans.
It comprises the letters ‘MUFC’ placed in an angular circle formation. The likeness to a swastika, though accidental, was picked up widely on social media.
To make matters worse the article is entitled ‘New Order’ – a phrase coloured with Nazi connotations by Adolf Hitler’s promise of a European New Order during the Second World War.
We can only assume it was in fact a reference to the Salford band of the same name.
United’s Head of Media David Sternberg reacted to growing criticism on Twitter by promising an investigation to how the image was published.
He tweeted: : "The creative is completely inappropriate; we apologise unreservedly and are taking appropriate internal action.
“Obviously it shouldn't have (been distributed)."
