Scotland Humbled In HK Sevens

Sat 29 Mar, 12:09 PM

Scotland suffered a humiliating 19-12 defeat to China in their second game of the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens.

Edinburgh's Gregor Laidlaw crossed under the posts but China responded instantly through Wang Jiacheng.

Glasgow Warriors' Colin Shaw touched down in the corner as Scotland restored their lead, but China then scored twice in succession.

Jin Ye utilised his pace to go round the outside of the Scotland defence for a converted try to level the scores at 12-12 before Zhang Zhiqiang burst through a gap with one minute remaining.

Richie Vernon made a fantastic individual break but could not offload the ball out of the tackle as China held on to dent Scotland's hopes of reaching a 10th straight IRB World Sevens Series cup quarter-final.

Scotland coach Stephen Gemmell told PA Sport: "We should be good enough to beat a team like China and that's not being disrespectful to them.

"But to be able to beat any team you have to perform, and we didn't perform.

"There are massive highs and lows in this game and this is a massive low for me as a coach.

"We need to regroup quickly - this type of tournament is very unforgiving - if you feel sorry for yourself then you'll be punished."

Kenya, 47-0 victors over China on day one, await Scotland in their final Pool E fixture.

"We know what Kenya are like," added Gemmell. "If we perform like that against Kenya then we'll be on a hiding to nothing.

"The players need to bin that game and be ready to go again.

"That's a massive disappointment for everybody involved but we need to move forward."

Tonga opened day two by outmuscling hosts Hong Kong in a 56-5 victory in Pool F.

Llanelli's Lee Williams scored 14 points as Wales romped to a second straight victory in Pool D with a 34-5 defeat of Korea.

Ospreys' Gareth Owen and Aled Brew, captain Jonathan Edwards, of the Scarlets, and Williams each touched down in the first half as Wales opened up a 24-0 half-time lead.

Cardiff's Richard Pugh scored early in the second period before Lee Jung-Min claimed a try for Korea.

But Williams added his second try of the game to complete the rout.

Wales finish their Pool D campaign against Fiji later today.

Ben Gollings, the world record points holder in sevens rugby, scored 22 points as England claimed an emphatic 47-7 victory over Sri Lanka.

England stepped up a gear after a 24-12 opening-day win over Canada to set up a potential Pool C decider with defending champions Samoa.

Sunnybank's Gollings crossed for two tries and Northampton's John Brake and Ebbw Vale's Simon Hunt added scores as England established a 28-0 half-time lead.

Saracens' Noah Cato sped down the left wing to open the second-half scoring.

Pradeep Mahesh Liyanage was on the end of a well-worked move to reply for Sri Lanka, but Sale's Chris Mayor crossed under the posts at the other end.

Bristol's Anthony Elliott completed the rout with a try at the end.

Samoa, who play Canada in their opening day two fixture, defeated Sri Lanka 35-7 on day one.

Scotland's run of nine successive cup quarter-finals was ended by a 19-7 defeat against Kenya.

Scotland, who lost to Kenya at Murrayfield last June, struggled to combat the direct running and clean ball retention of the Africans in the Pool E encounter.

Humphrey Kayanage cut a straight line to dissect the Scotland defence and score under the posts to break the deadlock as Kenya established a 7-0 lead at the break.

Kenya made the most of an overlap for Innocent Simiyu to score 30 seconds into the second half before Kayanage slipped down the blindside for his second of the game.

Scotland spread the ball the width of the field and back again for Edinburgh's Alistair Warnock to pull a try back halfway through the second period but it proved too little, too late as Scotland failed to reach the last eight of the cup for the first time since February 2007.

Coach Stephen Gemmell told PA Sport: "It's not the way we wanted it to end - we wanted it to end because we got to a semi-final.

"But the challenge now is how to respond to that.

"We made life really difficult for ourselves this morning with that result against China because what that effectively meant was we were depending on the result in the last game.

"The boys are feeling sorry for themselves but they've got to pick themselves up and come back tomorrow and do it all again."

China, who upset Scotland earlier on day two, succumbed to a 40-10 loss at the hands of Portugal.

Wales were forced to sweat over a cup quarter-final place following a 15-0 loss to Pool D winners Fiji.

Ratunasia Narukutabua scored the only try of a tight opening period to hand Fiji a 5-0 half-time lead.

Lepani Nabuliwaqa extended Fiji's advantage three minutes into the second half and Wales struggled to find a gap in the Pacific islanders' all-encompassing defence.

William Ryder scored a fantastic individual try to cap the win.

Wales captain Jonathan Edwards told PA Sport: "We were unfortunate.

"When you're playing against these teams you've got to take your one or two opportunities, which we failed to do."

England claimed a narrow 7-5 win over defending champions Samoa to progress to the cup quarter-finals.

Ben Ryan's team, looking for a fifth title in Hong Kong in seven years, extended their 100% record in a dramatic match following Pool B wins over Canada and Sri Lanka.

Bristol's Anthony Elliott was denied by a last-ditch tackle before Samoa responded, recycling the ball swiftly and puncturing the England defence through the middle before spreading the ball wide for Alafoti Fa'osilvia to score.

England were resilient in defence to deny Samoa shortly before the break as the half ended 5-0.

Elliott latched on to a chip early in the second period, but had the ball knocked out of his hands with the line beckoning.

Ebbw Vale's Simon Hunt then took the direct approach, barging his way through to the line and Ben Gollings converted to put England in front.

Samoa's Mikaele Pesamino was denied a stoppage-time score when he put a foot in touch as England held on.

Hunt told PA Sport: "You don't need to win by 40 points, you just need to beat teams and we'll take 7-5 - that's a massive margin."
