Peacock: Carry Club Form Forward

New Great Britain captain Jamie Peacock is hoping Leeds Rhinos' winning touch can rub off onto the national team for the Test series with New Zealand which gets under way in Huddersfield on Saturday.

Coach Tony Smith has largely gone for the players in form by selecting more than half of his 20-strong squad from the two Grand Finalists, Leeds and St Helens.

Uncapped prop Maurie Fa'asavalu is one of seven St Helens players in the reckoning and Peacock could line up alongside four of his championship-winning team-mates in the Galpharm Stadium opener.

As the only specialist scrum-half in the squad, Rob Burrow is guaranteed to start at seven and Gareth Ellis is a shoo-in for a second-row spot. Peacock, Burrow and Ellis were all members of the 2007 Super League Dream Team.

At 30, Keith Senior may be the oldest player in the squad but he is still one of the leading centres in the country and Kevin Sinfield is in contention for the loose-forward role.

"Quite a few of the Leeds players' form has increased over the last six or seven weeks of the season and we want to take that into the Test series," said Peacock.

"Tony has picked people who are on form and we want to repay the faith he has shown us.

"Over the last three or four years Great Britain have had a strong pack and I don't see it being any different this year."

Meanwhile, Peacock has been delighted to link up with his old Bradford team-mate James Lowes, who has joined the new-look Great Britain backroom staff as conditioner.

"Jimmy always inspired me as a player and I'm really pleased to meet up with him again," he said.

"It's good for Great Britain as well to have someone of his calibre involved."

New Zealand coach Gary Kemble has rung the changes following his side's 58-0 thrashing by Australia, with only Huddersfield-bound centre Paul Whatuira and winger Taniela Tuiaki keeping their places in a new-look back division.

There are places for Super League trio Thomas Leuluai, Tame Tupou and Shontayne Hape, who was on the bench in Wellington, and there are call-ups for Lance Hohaia and newcomer Sam Perrett.
