South Africa stand-in centre Francois Steyn has been cited for allegedly biting Tonga winger Joseph Vaka.

The decision to cite Steyn could bring his World Cup campaign to an end as the recommended punishment for such an offence is a ban of six months to three years.

Steyn, 20, is accused of making the action during the win over Tonga in Lens on Saturday.

"Francois Steyn has been cited in connection with an allegation of biting involving the Tonga wing Joseph Vaka," World Cup organisers declared.

The Natal Sharks youngster normally plays as a winger or full back but is currently filling for Jean de Villiers at inside centre.

He is widely regarded to be one of the top prospects in South African rugby but if he is found guilty could find his career at a standstill.
