Buchberger, 41, will be assistant coach to Craig MacTavish for the 2008-09 season, the Oilers said in a statement.

A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including 13 as an enforcer with Edmonton, Buchberger won the Stanley Cup with the Oilers in 1987 and 1990.

He played 1,182 regular-season games with Edmonton, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Pittsburgh, registering 105 goals, 204 assists and 309 points.

Buchberger began his coaching career in 2004 and guided the Springfield Falcons, Edmonton's American Hockey League affiliate, to fifth place last season with a win-loss record of 35-35.

It was the first time since 1998-99 that the Falcons ended a season by reaching the .500 mark.
