Bourgoin enjoyed the best possible start when Benoît Cabello touched down in the first minute after their forwards bound in the maul to force their way over the line and Benjamin Boyet converted.

The score was 12-0 only three minutes later as fly-half Boyet faked to pass and carried the ball into the 22 before eluding Nicolas Brusque and Takudzwa N'Gwenya to score.

Sébastien Laloo could not add the conversion but made up for it on seven minutes with a drop-goal to increase the Bourgoin lead to 15.

The breakneck pace continued as two minutes on N'Gwenya pulled back a try for the Basques following good work by wing Philippe Bidabé. Boyet added a penalty for Bourgoin before the break.

Florian Denos was powerless to prevent American wing N'Gwenya scoring seven minutes into the second half to take the score to 21-10, but once again fly-half Julien Dupuy failed with his conversion.

Bourgoin scored twice more to secure the win, both subjected to the video referee - Welshman Chris Wyatt and Frenchman Jean-François Coux the men to cross - and both converted by Boyet.

N'Gwenya completed his hat-trick late on but, despite his heroics, Biarritz were losers on the night.
