Coma fell close to the finish line during the first special of stage two of the rally in Romania. He was immediately withdrawn from the competition and taken back to Barcelona amidst fears he had damaged knee ligaments.

But, while he did suffer small hairline fractures of the kneecap and right tibia, there was no lasting damage and a recovery is expected to take place within a matter of weeks as opposed to months.

"Luckily it seems that it's not a serious injury," Coma said after being examined at the USP Institut Universitari Dexeus. "I was worried because knee injuries are normally complicated and require a long period of recovery.

"Apparently there's a hairline fracture in my shinbone and knee cap, but the ligaments are fine, which is the most important.

"Now we have to wait for the swelling to subside and then we can start work on recovery."
