Cockerill Handing Over In Good Shape

Sat 20 Oct, 07:09 PM

Leicester head coach Richard Cockerill declared himself satisfied with the defending champions' start to the season after a 28-20 victory over Worcester at Welford Road.

Cockerill took charge of his last Guinness Premiership game before handing over to Marcelo Loffreda, who led Argentina to the bronze medal in the World Cup.

Leicester have claimed four wins from their opening six games during the world Cup and were missing five England players for the visit of struggling Worcester.

Cockerill said: "We would have settled for four wins out of six during the World Cup.

"We put ourselves in a great position. People have been critical of the way we have played but they have to realise what we are dealing with.

"We have suffered more than any other club during this spell and we have come through it very well. We will only get stronger."

Cockerill admitted Leicester were not at their best against Worcester but added: "I would have liked us to have played better, but it was a good result and keeps us in the mix.

"We worked very hard and scored some nice tries.

"Worcester are a difficult side to play against. They are not missing any players and it was a good win for us.

"We had a tough six weeks and we've shown that strength in depth is there."

Worcester director of rugby Mike Ruddock said his side only had themselves to blame for a defeat that leaves them still searching for their first win of the season.

He said: "It's just not happening for us at the moment and it's disappointing because I thought we were the better side.

"We tried to play rugby and our two tries were as good as you will see, but silly errors meant we were chasing the game.

"We gave away a couple of bizarre tries and put ourselves under pressure."

Ruddock was unhappy that the game went to uncontested scrums late in the first half after Leicester had both props replaced.

He said: "Uncontested scrums is not what the game is all about. It devalues the game and I think we need to look at making teams have two props on the bench."
