Credit Agricole's Simon Gerrans took victory on a dramatic stage 15 of the Tour de France in Prato Nevoso that saw Frank Schleck (CSC) take the yellow jersey.
While the Australian proved too strong for fellow breakaway riders Egoi Martinez (Euskaltel), Danny Pate (Garmin-Chipotle) and Jose Luis Arrieta (Ag2r) on the first-category mountain-top finish, drama unfolded further down the mountain as Schleck and Bernhard Kohl (Gerolsteiner) both moved away from race favourite Cadel Evans (Silence-Lotto) to take first and second places on the general classification respectively.
Schleck now holds a 7 second lead over mountain specialist Kohl, with Evans a second further back. Despite a crash during a solo attack on the final climb, Rabobank's Denis Menchov also finished strongly to reduce his arrears on the yellow jersey to 38 seconds ahead of Monday's rest day.
After a flurry of early attacks, among which Britain's David Millar was prominent, a lead trio comprising of Pate, Martinez and Arrieta managed to put significant time between themselves and the peloton.
As the pack trundled along miserably under stormy skies and lashing rain, Gerrans chanced his arm and bridged the gap across to the three escapees ahead of the first climb of the day, the hors-categorie Col Agnel.
By the time they reached the summit, they had extended their lead to a healthy 14 minutes over a lackadaisical peloton, though the previous days efforts' combined with the length of the climb were nevertheless too much for Stijn Devolder and Mark Renshaw, who both stepped off their bikes.
The hesitancy with which the leaders approached the descent of the Agnel indicated the technical nature of the descent, while the weather spelled the end of Oscar Pereiro's race as the peloton arrived. The Spaniard collided with Barloworld's Robbie Hunter, before being sent hurtling over one crash barrier and tumbling 10 metres into the stretch of road below. He was rushed away in an ambulance with a suspected broken shoulder and thigh bone.
As Damiano Cunego, who had been widely tipped to go all out for the stage win in his native Italy, saw his chances of a stage victory diminish with every kilometre that passed, the Lampre team eventually moved to the front of the peloton to try and whittle down the gap, which had grown to a massive 17 minutes by the midpoint of the stage.
Just as the Lampre domestiques were beginning to take time out the breakaway, a large crash took out a large number of riders at the front of the bunch on both sides of a roundabout, including the aforementioned Cunego as well as Garmin-Chipotle's Christian Vandevelde and white jersey Vincenzo Nibali.
As the fall put an end to any faint hopes Lampre may have had of reeling in the breakaway, so CSC moved to the front and set a punishing tempo into heart of the final climb of the day that saw Evans isolated, shorn of his team-mates.
While Cunego (Lampre) and Kim Kirchen (Columbia) were dropped, Menchov launched a big attack, only to crash soon after on an uphill turn on the wet tarmac.
Evans weakness' was plain for all to see, however, and soon Kohl, Sastre and Menchov again burst clear of the Australian, while Alejandro Valverde bridged the gap shortly afterwards.
While Kohl went all out for the yellow jersey and crossed the line ahead of Sastre with Valverde and Menchov a few seconds further back, Frank Schleck managed to drop Evans within the final kilometre to turn his one-second deficit into a seven-second advantage on the general classification, and claim the maillot jaune for the first time in his career.

Sastre is the only cyclist left from the old school who is willing to attack. should look to see him on the podium.
its great to see a good battle hopefully (im sure) between the clean riders, but i dont think im too keen on this years route, it lacks something for me but great tour, Vive Le Tour!!!
It's great to see such a close battle amongst the top riders in the race. What a shame Denis Menchov fell, but what great drama. I think this has been one of the best TDFs in ages, despite, or perhaps because of, Ricco's dismissal and Astana's exclusion. I can't remember a time when the tour has been so open or hard fought. I think this kind of racing, plus the gutsy successes of riders like Cavendish and Kirchen are the remedy to a wounded sport.
Another power house display by the CSC. I was suprised to see perenial nearly man Sastre going for it as well. I'm getting behing Schleck from now on, with the support of his team he will will the tour.
If Cadel doesn't loose more than a minute in the Alps, I think he will win, because in TT he is the best of the bunch on top, Sastre, Khol Schelck even Menchov: I'm not shure only about Vande velde (the most Belgium American I Know :-) )
But keeping the pace like today is not going to be easy for anyone in the next days, I'm desapoitent with Popovich he is never there.
Other think is Menchov is always alone Like Cadel and he did atack today, but people keep forgeting he is also alone in the mountains
Fantastic race
I think it eill be decidi between Cadel and Menchov, my only doubt is Vande Velde, Shleck and Sastre will have to win a lot of time in the Alps.
Cadel does not attack (he is not Lance), yes I would like to see him racing in a team like CSC Columbia or Astana, in Lotto if I was in his position I wouldn´t attack either

I like the schlek brothers andy today was awesome on the last climb he made them all suffer he's surely a future winner of this race. I think this year will go down to the final TT on Sat, i think all the overall contenders are to close to each other in the mountains if this is the case i can see Evans winning overall :)
Evans has no support, and looked a little frail when they upped it in the final 3. He'll recover overnight, he has to attack in the next 2 days, he needs to put some time into FS that he can protect in the time trial.
Come on Cadel.
They ganged up on you today
HANG IN THERE AND YOU WILL WHIP THEM IN THE TIMETRIAL!!!!
Hopefully, Menchov will take it. He had a great performance today. What a pity that he had this crash - could possibly take the yellow jersey.
Cannot wait until Wednesday and the Alpe d'Huez !!! 6 riders 49 seconds apart !!!
Trivia question - When was the last time 5 riders were less than a minute apart going into the third week ??
whats kohls tt like??
great to see evans decked in that last k. Pity about Cunego though, he could have been a great tour winner.
well done to Schleck
hopefully him or Kohl wins overall
Cadel proved again today that he will never win le tour
WHEEL SUCKER
The brothers said they would do it together today and they did. Super team effort from CSC. Its another thing to retain it still. And I hope they didnt cheat. thats always an apprehension these days after a high drama.
