INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (AFP) - Frenchman Gilles Simon captured the Indianapolis Tennis Championships title when he overwhelmed defending champion Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday.
The world number 25 surpassed the 1993 effort of compatriot Olivier Delaitre, who reached the final but lost to Wayne Ferreira.
Russian Tursunov failed in his bid to become only the third man in the last 30 years here to defend a title after Pete Sampras (1991, 1992) and Andy Roddick (2003, 2004).
Simon, 23, had a sparkling debut week in the US midwest as he produced his best effort at an American tournament after a previous top showing in the 2007 New Haven quarter-final.
The second seed has now won two titles this season after winning in Casablanca on clay in May.
Tursunov ended with 32 unforced errors and lost his serve twice.
Simon will play a qualifier in next week's Toronto Masters before the winner faces Roger Federer in the second round.
