Euro 2008 - Comeback kings Turkey do it again

Eurosport - Sat, 21 Jun 10:16:00 2008

Turkey beat Croatia on penalties after a heart-stopping 1-1 extra-time draw in their Euro 2008 quarter final in Vienna.

FOOTBALL Croatia-Turkey - Semih Senturk - 0

Croatia thought they had won the tie when substitute Ivan Klasnic scored a fairytale goal after a Rustu Recber goalkeeping error in the final minute of extra-time.

But, right on the whistle, Semih Senturk hammered the ball into the roof of the net from just inside the area after a speculative punt downfield from Rustu.

And the veteran Besiktas goalkeeper - only in the team because Volkan Demirel was suspended - turned from zero to hero when he pulled off a wonderful save from Mladen Petric's penalty to send his side into a tantalising semi final against Germany.

Turkey scored all three of their spot-kicks - Arda Turan, Semih and Hamit Altintop on target - while only Darijo Srna scored his for the Croats.

Man-of-the-match Luka Modric and the 20-year-old Ivan Rakitic sent their penalties wide.

It was an incredible finish to a tense, tactical affair that was dominated by Croatia in normal time but saw Turkey have the better of extra-time.

A tetchy start burst into life on five minutes, when Hamit fired a low drive just wide.

Sabri Sarioglu - who looked uncomfortable playing at right-back - then gave the ball away to Modric, who found Srna, who was unable to shoot before Turkey's defence got back to block.

Turkey continued to keep a fair amount of possession but looked unable to create clear-cut opportunities, and most of their half-chances came from distance.

Mehmet Topal sent a superb rising drive just wide of the woodwork with Stipe Pletikosa nowhere near it, while Middlesbrough forward Tuncay Sanli had a decent shout for an indirect free-kick in the penalty area after he was obstructed by Josip Simunic.

But it was Croatia who created most of the excitement. Modric looked every penny of the £16.5 million Tottenham forked out for his services, causing havoc in the Turkey defence with his clever running and deft passing.

The diminutive playmaker made one superb chance for Ivica Olic when he cut the ball across the face of the six-yard box on 18 minutes, but the lone Croatia striker somehow hammered his finish off the underside of the bar with the goal at his mercy.

But the sides were level at the break, despite Slaven Bilic's men having the edge.

Croatia came out for the second half with all guns blazing, while Turkey seemed to have left their ability to defend in the dressing room.

Rustu's decision-making on long balls and crosses belied his experience, as Olic and then Portsmouth midfielder Niko Kranjcar went close to embarrassing him.

Turkey were giving the ball away as Modric in particular threatened to carve them apart.

But the Croats were unable to make their possession and chances tell, with Kranjcar guilty of a glaring miss when he fired straight at Rustu from close-range after Modric again slid him through.

Rakitic was responsible for the miss of the half though, when just after 70 minutes he fired wildly over from a one-on-one position after a clever one-two with Olic.

It highlighted Croatia's one positional problem - the lack of a natural goalscorer - although the game Olic went close with a header from a difficult position soon afterwards.

Turkey's poor ball retention up front led coach Fatih Terim to bring on Semih for Mehmet and switch to a more conventional 4-4-2.

They immediately looked more comfortable, and played the ball around in midfield with confidence as successive half-chances were created but intercepted by Pletikosa.

Turkey still struggled to create chances though, while Croatia almost snatched winners through a Srna free-kick that Rustu saved well and a weak Olic finish in the 90th minute after Modric found him at the near post.

A late twist was avoided when Olic hammered a loose ball over from a great position in the final seconds of injury-time.

Extra-time followed, and Croatia's profligacy in front of goal led Bilic to bring Klasnic on for the wasteful Olic.

But Turkey, with their more familiar formation and renowned stamina, started to get a grip on the match.

Semih had two good efforts, one shot that flew just over and another half-chance when Croatia failed to clear a long ball, the substitute denied by Robert Kovac getting his body in the way.

Tuncay then sent a low drive from the edge of the box just wide of the left-hand post as Croatians legs tired in the sweltering humidity.

But nothing could prepare anyone for the finish. As the clock ticked down to penalties, a quick Croatia break seemed to have been halted by the Turks tracking back before Rustu inexplicably rushed to the edge of his area with Modric finding the ball on the right.

The ex-Fenerbahce and Barcelona man realised his folly and ran back to his goal, but it was too late, and Modric's centre found Klasnic - only recently recovered from a kidney transplant - who nodded the ball past the flailing Rustu.

And there was more to follow, with Bilic furious both because he had not been able to bring on sub Jarko Leko and also because Semih's leveller was scored four seconds after the allocated one minute of stoppage time had passed.

The shoot-out heart-break that followed saw Bilic comfort his inconsolable charges - with Srna in particular weeping uncontrollably - while Turkey, the rank outsiders ahead of co-hosts Austria and Switzerland, progressed to an unlikely semi final.

  1. zvonimir, the Croats launched an offensive against the innocent Serbs living in Croatia and ethnically cleansed the region. It says so in the UN reports. You are fascist criminals FOREVER, and disgust most of the world who knows the truth. Smrt for fascists.

  2. Look Bella, why would Croatia apologize for something individuals did during the war? And our crimes are incomparable to the crimes Serbs did to us. Also, there was no ethnic cleansing of Serbs after operation Storm(Oluja). 99% of Serbs left their homes couple of days before our army liberated the territory. Their leaders were planing an evacuation years before our operation. There were some crimes, but only individual.
About the second world war, we are ashamed of hat time. But why doesn't anybody talk about post war crimes against Croats? About 100 000 people were killed after the war and nobody was condemned.
And you mustn't forget on thing, CROATIA WAS ATTACKED BY SERBIA! We had to defend our country which had very little support from other countries. We did it and we are PROUD of that victory which some sporadic and INDIVIDUAL crimes cannot minimize.

  3. Well what can I say, such a FANTASTIC match on Friday I couldn't leave my seat.
Trust us to bring the drama, excitement and unpredictability.
I am so proud of the heart and passion our Turkish footballers have and how they don't believe in giving up until the final second.
I hope they will win against Germany and go on to prove to everyone that they are capable of achieving anything despite all the negativity they receive.
Big Respect to Fatih Terim a truly remarkable man who has bought them so far!

Another thing stop with all the bitter and nasty comments about the Croats, this is not who we are, this is not what the TURKS are about.
This is game that should bring us all together and we should be able to leave our differences at home!
One of my closest friend is Croatian and I love her like my own sister and is closer to me than most Turkish friends, so lets not punish those who have no control over ploitical issues.

We are only here to prove on thing and that is we are more than capable of becoming one of the world's top football teams!

Peace & Love to all Turks & Croats!

  5. zvonimir, Canada apologized to the Natives for the crimes committed against the Natives, and an FYI, a lot of Natives did not die due to violence or genocide, but through disease that the whites brought along that they were not immune to. The Croats, as far as I know, never apologized for their crimes against the Serbs and Muslims. The Croats keep repeating the same crimes, Canada does not. That is what is disturbing and disgusting.

  6. It is such a shame that Croats attacked the Bosnian Muslims in Mostar because the Croats were losers. This is another thing that they should be ashamed of on top of their fascist past and recent war crimes that they are guilty of, including ethnic cleansing of 200,000 Serbs in Croatia. Why are you people so violent?

  8. as I am a turk, I have some complicated feelings, this is just a game, what has this victory changed in our lives ? nothing, I don't understand why we are so happy over this game, there are big problems facing us, such as unemployment, security, inflation, poverty, I remember C. A. Parreira (former Brazilian coach) saying before the 2006 world cup " even if we managed to be the world champion, what would it change in Brazilians' lives, nothing! "

  10. And cut the @#$%, every country has something in their past which they should be ashamed of.

  11. To bella from Canada, your country should first deal with your own past and then give lessons to my country. We have only 4 years for witch we are ashamed of(1941-45), but your country is based on genocide against the natives in north America. From the end of 19. century to the 70's 150 000 Indian children were taken from their families and half of them died. Is that the ''democrat and liberal'' Canada?

From zvonimirzg, on Sun 22 Jun 2:35PM
  12. To all the Croatian fascists, I want to congratulate you on once again proving that your fascism has not changed from your Nazi allegiance. Now in Mostar dozens were hurt simply because you were losers and couldn't face the fact that you're nothing.
Of course, this violent, disgusting behaviour is not a surprise, considering the ethnic cleansing you committed against the Serbs in Croatia. Croats, I know you're proud of this new act of violence in Mostar, just as you are proud of your fascist past and recent war crimes that you committed. Congrats, you deserve the recognition!

  15. Great game Turks. Glad you won, and in the fashion you did. Winning 20-0 would not be as good as this victory was. Letting them have a laughter for a minute was fantastic, then scoring in the last minute was even better. Then finally, the penalties. I mean WOW!!!

This is supposed to be just a game, a sports torunament. They say no to racism just about every game. And some idiots here take it totally opposite. If you are a Turk, or anybody else, relax, chill and enjoy the victory.

For all the Croats, good luck next time, and for those of you who were boasting how your country stopped Turkey from invading Europe in the 17th century, first go back to school and learn some history, Turks were actually under Vienna's walls, and second, now go join Mr. Srna and the rest of the national team in their tears. I guess there will be a flooding soon in Croatia and all the countries where Sava and Danube flow :)

I am glad especially for idiots who consider themselves Ustasha's in Bosnia. They sang nazi songs and tried to impose themsleves on peaceful neighbors. Now they are quiet and in tears. Good job Turkey. If you knew how much this victory meant for people worldwide. Not just Turks. Whatever happens now, it is ok, I hope u win the rest of your games. But if you don't, this was the championship game.

Fate is a strange thing, is it not??? Croatian pride was one, but nationalism, nazism, religious hatred brought them what they deserve, which is not a loss, but a HEARTBREAKING LOSS:)

    From amir_bos, on Sun 22 Jun 2:21AM
  16. As a Turk, I want to congratulate the Croatian side for a well played game, hats off to the Croatians, you are a good team and we Turks respect your new country and your football.

And of course, I want to give a standing applause to my team, the Turkish side, they didnt play their best, they made lots of mistakes, but they played with spirit and heart and won, well done Turkish team, we are proud of you all. :)))

Also to fellow Turks, pls try to ignore insultive comments attempted by some who try to stir us all up, dont fall for their trap.

We love Turkiye and we respect Croatia, long live football, long live Turkiye-Croatia friendship, long live Turkiye and world people.

Fingers crossed for the Turkiye-Germany match, go Turkiye.!

Salam Alaykum wa Rahmatulillahi wa Barakatuhu

  18. Man o man... why do most people here talk about anything else than football. Truth be told it was a great game and unbelieveble result. It was a heartbreak for the Turks first and I was dissapointed because I thought I was going to watch a penalty shootout. But the biggest surprise came 2 minutes later. I feel for the Croats not being able to hold on... but thats the beauty of football. I believe it was meant to be a tie.

As for the rest of the comments people just get a life as no one is better then the next person here.

Hope to see a great game tonight Russia 3 Netherlands 3 (the dutch will progress on penalties)

  19. Wednesday night match won't be an ordinary "match"! It will be a struggle of honour, pride, persistence and decree of two ancient and noble nations. Let the world taste this extraordinary delight. Let us remember the days that football was played like a game among friends! Let the best win!

  20. I enjoyed watching ALL the teams that QUALIFIED for this Euro 2008, it has been a excellent tournament so far. I would like to congratulate all the teams that participated and for playing beautiful football for all of us to enjoy!!!

The Spanish, Dutch and Germans are always favourites in the Euro's, what makes football competitions exciting and entertaining is the unexpected surprise of other teams like Turkey producing exciting, inspirational and memorable matches.

Football is a BEUTIFUL game for ALL to SHARE in the experience and spread love, however, there are some people posting comments here that clearly sheds light on their shallow character.

We should all thank the Almighty, because they can not stop themselves showing their true intentions, which are fuelled by hatred and jealousy for others success.

If you take their comments out of football context, you will discover they are attempting to poison and divide groups of people, rather than bring together to celebrate and rejoice.

Goodluck to all the semi final teams.

    Peace and Love.
