McCormack To Lead Scots' Bid

Wed 19 Mar, 04:09 AM

Scotland have confirmed Widnes boss Steve McCormack as their coach for the World Cup in Australia this autumn and announced a five-figure sponsorship deal with the Co-operative.

McCormack, 35, who masterminded the Scots' qualification in November, has been re-appointed on a part-time basis on a 12-month deal.

"I'm delighted that I will lead this proud nation into its second consecutive World Cup," said McCormack, who has held the post for the last four years.

"Rugby league is a rapidly-developing sport in Scotland and an appearance in the World Cup alongside some of the best players in the world will only help continue this.

"Leading the team out at the World Cup will be one of my proudest moments and I would like to thank the board of the Scottish Rugby League for putting their faith in me."

Castleford scrum-half Danny Brough has been re-appointed captain while Richard Thewlis, managing director of Huddersfield, has been appointed general manager.

Scotland, who lost all three of their group matches under Shaun McRae in the 2000 World Cup, have been drawn in pool two alongside France and Fiji.
