Sarries Book Quarter-Final Spot

Sat 19 Jan, 12:39 AM

Saracens reached the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup for the first time in their history and ended Glasgow's European dream in the process with a 21-17 victory at a wind-lashed Firhill.

While victory for the Guinness Premiership side was always going to be enough, the Warriors needed a convincing win to keep alive their quest to reach the last eight of Europe's premier club competition.

But they could not find an answer to the pace, power and guile of the English visitors when it mattered most.

A dubious Richard Haughton try - awarded by television official Brian Fitzgerald - got Sarries off and running and 16 points from Glen Jackson, including a try on the brink of half-time, ensured they were never headed.

Dan Parks kept Glasgow close with four penalties, but those points - and a well-worked try by Bernie Stortoni - were only enough for a bonus point.

In the other game in the pool, Biarritz ensured hapless Viadana remained winless as they ran out 25-16 winners.

USA winger Takudzwa Ngwenya ran in two of the hosts' four tries, with Jacques Cronje and Manuel Carizza adding the other touchdowns and Marcelo Bosch kicking one conversion and a penalty.

Calvin Howarth was the star for the Italians, scoring one converted try and landing three conversions.
