Murray, who has spent the last four seasons as an assistant with the Philadelphia Flyers, has 11 years of head coaching experience with the Flyers, Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers.

"I am very excited about this opportunity," Murray said after signing a reported three-year contract.

"This will be my biggest challenge as a coach. There is a lot of work ahead and it will take a collective effort to execute the plan we have in place."

The 57-year-old Murray led the Flyers to the Stanley Cup finals in 1997 and has a career record of 360-288-89. He replaces former Kings coach Marc Crawford, who guided Los Angeles for two seasons.

The Kings had the second-worst record in the NHL last season and tied for a league-low 71 points.
