Championship - Martinez dismisses United link

Swansea manager Roberto Martinez has said that he is flattered to be linked with the vacant Manchester United assistant manager's job, but is concentrating on life at the Liberty Stadium.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is looking for a new assistant after Carlos Queiroz left to become coach of the Portuguese national team.

Spaniard Martinez, who led Swansea to promotion from League One to the Championship last season in his first year in charge, has been installed as one of the favourites to move to Old Trafford but insists he is not thinking about such a move.

"It is a huge compliment coming from the best football club in Europe, but it's a compliment for Swansea City," he said.

"There's nothing to be making decisions on, I've got too much work on my hands here at the moment."

Other names linked with the position have included: Brian McClair, Mike Phelan, United development coach Rene Meulensteen, Benfica assistant manager Pako Ayesteran, and perhaps most ambitiously of all Bordeaux manager Laurent Blanc.

Earlier this month, Ferguson said he was in no rush to make an appointment.

"You take your time with these things," he said.

"I knew when Portugal came for him that it would be very difficult for us. But we've good staff and we'll carry on."

  1. *R.M* being linked with mufc does'nt surprise me one bit.
what he's done @ swansea "what he's doing @ swansea" is quite remarkable 4 a young manager and he's the envy of many of clubs "yes cardiff u2" but he's a dedicated man and likes to finish things that hes started
he's got time on his side and more opportunities for him to join big clubs will no doubt come his way after he's made the swans a big name club. by 2014 the jacks will b world renowned and Roberto el-taff Martinez will b holding the world cup aloft whether he's managing Spain or Wales
by the way A.F knows who his number 2 is none other than Mr Ryan Giggs he's been grooming him for a while he'll b No'2 for a couple of seasons till king alex decides he's ready to take over his throne with scholes as RG No'2 jack army

  5. The success of Mn united has evolved around team work. The departure of carlos may be felt but not necessarily derailing the progress of team. What remains of us is to wish him all the best when he takes charge of Portugal. I trust Alex is always able to fire from the hip.

  6. carlos going is a shame, he has been a big man especially last year when we were bringing in nani and anderson, BUT we wont struggle without him, he is still a friend to utd and lets not forget that Alex Ferguson is no slouch.. im sure utd will bring a new man in, someone that may even inject something new to utd. i would love to see someone come in that can go on to be the new utd boss in 3 years, eric cantona! it aint gonna happen but i can dream, how cool would that be, and funny! the god as manager, i would love it

  7. with the greatest of respect carlos, its a bad move, being a number two is far more different from being no 1, just ask real madrid, now a national coach, good luck
