Augusto Farfus and Robert Huff - first and second in the early morning session - swapped positions in second free practice at the WTCC meeting in Valencia.
They both set their fastest laps in the early stages, with no one capable of matching them for the rest of the session.
Farfus was the first to break the 1:45 barrier with 1:44.848, but minutes later Huff improved to 1:44.769, beating the Brazilian's time by 0.079 seconds.
Jorg Muller and Nicola Larini were clocked in third and fourth respectively, confirming the supremacy of BMW and Chevrolet in practice.
Tom Coronel was the fastest of the SEAT men, setting the fifth-best lap in 1:45.270 after displaying rallying skills when his car skidded sideways at one corner.
Franz Engstler and his BMW 320si emerged as the best of the independent pack, completing a lap of 1:46.036 for thirteenth overall, while James Thompson was not able to do better than 15th in his Honda.
As in the first session Ibrahim Okyay prematurely ended his run by spinning off at turn 11 to end up stranded in the gravel.
After being prevented by the stewards from taking part in the first session because of a technicality, the Russian Bears Motorsport LADA cars were allowed to hit the track with the agreement of the other competitors.
Jaap van Lagen was the fastest LADA driver in 20th.
