Ancic, a former Wimbledon semi-finalist who missed much of last season with glandular fever, cruised through the first set before Minar raised his game to take the second to the tiebreak which the former world number seven took 7-0.
Top seed David Ferrer beat Jesse Huta Galung of the Netherlands 6-2 6-3 on centre court.
"You don't get to stand in front of the world number five every day," said Huta Galung, who stands some 169 places lower in the ATP rankings than the Spaniard. "Unfortunately I immediately lost my way in both sets."
Belgium's Steve Darcis beat Florent Serra of France 7-5 6-3 to advance to the second round while it was a tough day for home players with all five losing.
In the women's singles event, first and second seeds Elena Dementieva and Anna Chakvetadze have received byes, while French Open runner-up Dinara Safina, seeded three, faces Pauline Parmentier of France in the first round.
