Evra Desperate For Euro Glory

Fri 16 May, 02:09 PM

Manchester United full-back Patrice Evra is aiming to end a personal four-year nightmare and lift the Champions League trophy on Wednesday.

The France international has never forgotten what it was to lose the final to Porto in 2004 when he was playing for Monaco.

Since then the 27-year-old has been determined to go one step further and win the biggest prize in European club football.

Evra, who moved to Old Trafford from Monaco in January 2006, cannot wait to face Chelsea in Moscow in the first all-English showdown.

United have won the trophy twice, most recently in 1999 when they recorded a famous last-gasp victory against Bayern Munich.

They face Chelsea in good heart after retaining their Barclays Premier League title thanks to beating Wigan on the final day.

Evra said: "Since I lost the final it has been been in my mind every day and I want to cancel out this bad memory.

"I cannot just play this game. I need to win this game and I do not care if it is Chelsea or another team.

"The match is also very important for Manchester United because it's a long time since 1999.

"We have to go there and play our game and enjoy the moment because it's unbelievable to play in the Champions League final.

"I think the team that wins will be the one that plays with the most fighting spirit.

"I hope we show that we have more character than Chelsea and get the victory."

Evra wants United and Chelsea to put on a show and emphasise how much the game has progressed in his two years in England.

He said: "I feel like I started another job when I came here. You see the fans, the intensity of the game.

"Every team is physically strong. For me playing in England is the best football in this world.

"Now I hope Manchester United and Chelsea show that in the final of the Champions League.

"When I arrived a lot of people told me football in England is just 'kick the ball away' but now I laugh because the football is the best in the world.

"To have four teams in the quarter-finals is unbelievable and I think you have to congratulate all of English football."

Evra has one year left on his contract and his agent is due to talk to United soon about a new deal.

For the moment, though, he does not want to be distracted from his big date in Russia.

Evra added: "I am just concentrating on the final. I have an agent and Manchester United know my situation.

"I have one year left. A meeting is coming but for now I'm concentrating on winning the Champions League."
