World Cup - Fiji promise stronger pack

Fiji forwards coach Greg Mumm promised a more competitive pack for the World Cup after the Pacific Islanders announced their 30-strong squad for the tournament in France.

Fiji have always dazzled opponents in the backs and with their broken-play running but traditionally have struggled when it comes to the set pieces.

But after naming 17 forwards and 13 backs in their World Cup 30, Mumm confirmed that they will be looking to develop that part of their game ahead in time for the tournament.

"I've seen the Fijian scrum has only been able to last 60 minutes, after which Fiji has been well beaten in that area," explained Australian Mumm.

"That is what we will work on because there hasn't been much time spent on this. We'll focus on individual technique and how to improve the pack.

"Most other nations have definitely over the years put in more percentage of work into the set-piece than in the past.

"We haven't done that enough but that will change when the team marches into camp."

Mumm added that the forwards would be having five sessions a week over the next six weeks in the build-up to the World Cup.

He was also confident it would allow the Fijians to compete for a place in the quarter-finals, which they have not reached since the inaugural event in 1987.

Fiji have been drawn in Pool B at the World Cup along with Australia, Wales, Canada and Japan.

They will need to finish as one of the top two teams in their pool to reach the knock-out stage, which is likely to require a win over either Australia or Wales.

"Out forwards will be more competitive," Mumm added. "We can defeat Wales as we have got the size up front and our forwards have got a good height advantage.

"If Fiji can dominate possession I'm confident we can upset Wales and we can also match the wallabies."

Included in the squad is 21-year-old fly-half Waisea Luveniyali, who impressed during the final trial match on Thursday.

Luveniyali will share the stand-off role with veteran Nicky Little, who is set to play in his third World Cup.

The two surprise omissions from the squad are number eight Alifereti Doviverata and veteran wing Sireli Bobo.

Doviverata was captain at the 2003 World Cup and tipped to lead the team again in France. Instead the selectors have gone for Sisa Koyamaibole, Akapusi Qera and Aca Ratuva.

Vilimone Delasau, Isoa Neivua and Filimone Bolavucu are the three specialist wings in the squad, while Mosese Rauluni (pictured) and Jone Dunivucu will share the scrum-half duties.

Fiji open their World Cup campaign against Japan in Toulouse on September 12.
