Meet the England new boys

Eurosport - Tue, 13 May 17:36:00 2008

England manager Martin Johnson named six uncapped players in his squad for next month's New Zealand tour. Eurosport takes a look at the new boys.

Danny Care - Harlequins - 0

Dylan Hartley

Club: Northampton

Position: Hooker

Height: 1.85,

Weight: 111kg

Born: Rotorua, New Zealand

Age: 22

A rampaging hooker very much in the mould of former Saint and England World Cup winner Steve Thompson. Has all the attributes to make a top-class international hooker: size, mobility and good hands. Also has attitude, but needs to learn how to curb it on the big occasion. Missed chance of making the World Cup squad when he was banned for six months for gouging. Will need to impress greatly in training to get in ahead of Lee Mears.

Danny Care (pictured)

Club: Harlequins

Position: Scrum-half

Height: 1.75m

Weight: 75kg

Born: Leeds

Age: 21

One of the most improved players of the season, Care played a huge part in Harlequins coming within one minute of the Premiership playoffs. A real livewire who keeps opposition back row honest with his sniping runs and speed off the mark. Served his apprenticeship under Andy Gomarsall before consigning England's World Cup scrum-half to the Quins 2nd XV. A more exciting option than Richard Wigglesworth, but the Sale man is in possession of the number nine jersey and will be hard to replace on short tour. Peter Richards's versatility will make it harder for Care to make the bench.

Topsy Ojo

Club: London Irish

Position: Wing/full-back

Height: 1.84m

Weight: 83kg

Born: Tottenham, London

Age: 22

A superb broken-field runner who has been in outstanding form this season. The Exiles wing was man-of-the-match when London Irish came within one score of beating French giants Toulouse in the Heineken Cup semi-finals. Loves to attack from deep and enjoys the one-on-one challenges. Can also cover at full-back, which could boost his chances of a spot amongst the replacements. Paul Sackey has the right wing spot nailed down, but Ojo could secure a start in one of the two Tests.

Nick Kennedy

Club: London Irish

Position: Lock

Height: 2.00m

Weight: 119kg

Born: Southampton

Age: 26

The leading line-out operator in the Premiership for the past couple of seasons, Kennedy fully deserves his call up. With second-row partner Bob Casey, Kennedy has made the London Irish line-out a real weapon, as Perpignan found out while going down to the Exiles in the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup. Has added a carrying game to his obvious line-out talents, but will do well to get a place on the bench behind skipper Steve Borthwick and Ben Kay. Competing with Tom Palmer for place among subs.

David Paice

Club: London Irish

Position: Hooker

Height: 1.85m

Weight: 101kg

Born: Darwin, Australia

Age: 24

A mobile hooker and an excellent line-out thrower. His accuracy helped make the London Irish lineout near-faultless this season. Should link up well with team-mate Kennedy if they get the chance to win first cap, but probably competing with Hartley for spot on the bench. His similarity to Lee Mears could work against him as England could opt to use Hartley as an impact player due to his greater size.

Jason Hobson

Club: Bristol

Position: Prop

Height: 1.80m

Weight: 108kg

Born: Swansea

Age: 25

Banned for three weeks last season for punching former England skipper Phil Vickery, Hobson chose the Red Rose ahead of his country of birth Wales. The tighthead could also have played for Ireland due to his grandfather. Was an unused replacement against Italy in the Six Nations and should benefit hugely from being in an elite environment again with the senior team. One of just four props, injury could well see Hobson earn a first cap.
