World number one Roger Federer said his third consecutive French Open final defeat to Rafael Nadal would not affect his hopes of a record sixth straight Wimbledon title.
The Swiss top seed was handed a 6-1 6-3 6-0 thrashing by the Spaniard, who equalled Bjorn Borg's professional era record of four successive Roland Garros victories on Sunday.
But Federer is expected to be more at ease on grass, having won the past five editions of Wimbledon, including two finals against Nadal in 2006 and 2007.
"I still definitely feel very strong about my chances and being the big favourite going into grass," said Federer, who will start his grasscourt season at the Halle tournament which begins on Monday.
"It's so far away, grass and clay, that losing in four or five (sets) or no chance like today, I don't think it has a big effect on me mentally."
Federer will beat Borg's record of five Wimbledon titles in a row if he prevails again at the All England Club next month.
It would also take his grand slam victories tally to 13, one short of Pete Sampras's record.
Last year, he needed five sets to overcome Nadal in the Wimbledon final, one more than the previous year.
"Of course, defeat is difficult today. I also feel how much Rafa has progressed on clay, but we'll see in the future if he is stronger on grass or on hard surfaces," added Federer, who has not lost a match on grass since his first-round defeat at Wimbledon against Croatia's Mario Ancic in 2002.
The Swiss admitted, however, that it would take a lot of hard work to win the only grand slam missing from his collection after he became the first man to lose a hat-trick of Roland Garros finals.
"After a loss like this you don't want to play Rafa again tomorrow, that's for sure," he said.
"You hope to be here again next year, and you probably assume that Rafa is going to be here, also. It doesn't make it easier. But I still believe that with the right mindset, with the hard work I'm going to be able to put in, I can win it."

FEDERER is the best but NADAL is better than him.
Guess he was wrong. But his time is not up. He made some stupid mistakes when he could've won it all. I think he's still the world number one and the number one favourite to win the US open
djokovic
federer still the best
Please Federer, stop dreaming! Your time has finished!
Please, i know that not everybody likes Federer, but do not crucify him for a bad day!who doesn´t have a bad day????on the last finals he had with nadal, he lost so many points that he gave the game to him!!!!!!!!!!this last final was not mormal!he didn´t play has he knows, that´s obvious!!!!!he is really good...give him a chance instead of "killing" is tallent!!!!it must be difficult to go through this last game, but i hope, for the sake of tenis, that he will be back!!go Roger, Portugal is with you!
Trying to say the sports fans site " B L A C K W H I T E K I S S .C O M ". yes, it is great. Girls there are hot and they enjoy ta lk ing sports and starts with you. Cool.
No matter what happens in Wimbledon roger is still the best and i for one will continue to support him 100%. He had a bad day yesterday we all have bad days. GO ROGER
Roger just tries to pick himself up after humiliating defeated by Rafa. Roger knows so well that Rafa is right behind him and ready to dethrone him on grass and any other surfaces. Roger knows that if he does not win any more grand slams this year; it would be very difficult for him to win any more grand slams after this year. He just makes a bold statement to intimidate other players, but it might not work anymore. The way Rafa beat him down like that, no mater what Roger did or said it won't be a factor. Rafa is so confident that he will be a force to be noticed anywhere he plays. It won't be too long before Rafa will have the most grand slams in his collections. By the time Rafa retires, he will have more grand slams than anybody in the Tennis world....
Mezeib, nice first comment there, but who in the world is able to re-educate a player like Roger? I mean, the guy knows all those things you said. He knows theory, he's more than proved it over several years, through his magnificent game. I'm not sure if it was Nadal who won yesterday more than Federer who lost. He only did as well as Rafa let him, but, on the other hand... a bit o f both. How do you teach someone the things he knows so well?
And yes, I thought it a little arrogant of him to go on about his grass record, everybody knows he's been the strongest on grass so far. I think he was more like trying to save an image he's been trying hard to preserve. The smile, the calmness and confidence must always seem to be there. Truth is he really doesn't know anymore, he betrayed his own insecurity by reminding his unbeaten record more than anything.
He'll be back. He's as great as ever. It got tougher than ever yesterday, and his focus is hurting more and more often... and it is history. England now.
you still besttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt...
I think Federer is jinxed by Nadal. Yesterday's match was nothing special. Federer was just rubbish and Nadal as a result did not produce anything speacial. It's in Fed's mind that he cannot beat Nadal on clay. He needs to be exorcised and I suggest on his next trip to Africa, he does a Michael Jackson and find someone to cleanse him otherwise he is a great tennis player and deserves to be No 1 - very humble all the time.
I do not believe he was bragging about being the fav going on grass - what do you expect him to say after such a walloping for a great player like him.
I think federer will win roland garos only if rafa is not there. He will bounce back Im sure and people should not count him out....and borg should shut his trap talking about favourites for titles before it commences and changes it when the favorite doesnt win,Rafa know the grass belongs to fed and fed knows clay is Rafa's. I love you Fed and your smile...This is fabulous kid from Nigeria.
right from my country here in cameroon at texaco obili i supported fed but it was a pity he made it to easy for nadal i hope he beats him up to at wimbledon for we all know he is the king.
mafany
and of course i agree you that nadal is a really kind boy and djokovic is a real fun to watch all the time, federer should relax a bit and look at them. I think that now he takes the game too seriously, maybe he should take a break after US Open, have some fun, watch TV, lie on the beach and come back as a new and fresh guy: with aspiration, homour, dignity and passion. But of course, everything starts with a new coach telling him all these things.
WHY my comment be denied ?
Why are you all saying this to Roger? Clay is definitely his weakest surface, no doubt, that means he doesn't have the play on clay, no proper tactics, no confidence against Nadal. Still, he is world number 1, on top of all rankings. What he needs is something different:
- new coach: tell him to be agressive, make his serve much better (needs more aces / easy points), practice volleying and use it much more often, and most importantly, strenghten his backhand - it has been way too weak this year, no winners, too many unforced errors. Backhand has never been his favourite, but his forehand was always there for the rescue. Now he has to rethink his basic hits, try something new, without less top spin, i dont know, but he has to CHANGE his game radically. He needs help, nobody could do it alone
- less contact with the media about his chances: it just hurts him when he tells himself he is the favourite. he should just answer some questions and not put more pressure on himself
- forget being an all time great: everybody is telling him he is the all time greatest, but for e.g playing sampras i think was not good for him. now he feels he has to break records and not simply beat nadal and djokovic. but first he has to analyze his main opponents and only then think about records. he has to come back to earth again and realize that both N-Djok and Rafa are really close to him in terms of technique and knowledge
- he has to find motivation again and respect to his fans. he cannot let his fans down by giving up a final way too early. maybe he needs a new girlfriend:) i don't know, but he has to put himself together mentally, he is really weak now and gives up really quickly
But otherwise you cant blame him. He's been playing exceptional tennis in the last 5 years and you cant expect him to be like that all the time. All of us knew that decline would come after all. His fans should help him get over this hard period by helping him and not blaming him. Go Roger!
Federe talks with the madia with arrogance and bragging saying I am "the big favourite going into grass" , or "Rafa has progressed on clay" as if this is the 1 time he wins roland garos... or " we'll see in the future if he is stronger on grass or on hard surfaces," such a ungratfulness to Nadal who talk about him always with respect, gently, and carefully (to say the truth-I don't know why.. ).
Before the final Nadal said: "There is no favourite, you have to play the best you can, this is tennis".
In the end of the final he apologize to Federer for the final....imagine
yourself...(it was realy too mach!)
When F.lost many times in the last months, Nada asked the media not to go out with headlines against him, because he will recover.
That's the "difference" ,among others ,between them.
yeal.
Yes, Federer needs to wake up and stop playing 'cool'. Ever since he had his glandular fever before the Oz Open, he's been very sloppy and lazy and lacking in determination, somehow hoping that his reputation or lucky shots will get him through. To lose 6-0 to anyone like that is terrible. He only just scraped through the SF too - his serve isn't so good, when he opens up on the forehand it goes into the net (never used to happen) and he doesn't hit it hard enough especially on the backhand to cause any trouble to opponents like Nadal. He doesn't hit it DEEP enough, basically - whereas good players do - and this is the key to winning points on clay/from the baseline, as I saw in the SF. I think he needs a new coach, one who will wake him up and get him developing his upper-body/arm strength (or switch to a double-handed backhand??) -otherwise, as his is such a confidence-based game, he'll just get worse and worse and it's disappointing and sad to see him lose like that, and continue to be in denial too.
I thought Federer looked a bit ill in France. He played like he just didn't care.
I reckon that since he didn't have a winning mind when he started the game on clay, he isn't so bothered by the fact that he lost. I think the real test will be on grass. But then, even if Federer loses on grass who's to say he won't be back on top next year. Nadal was fabulous and I'm very happy to see that he's respectful of his opponent. There can be no doubt of the ability of Nadal. I hope the two meet again on grass so we can all see just how much Nadal has improved his game.
