Russia's former Olympic biathlon gold medallist Olga Pyleva faces criminal proceedings in Italy for alleged doping after failing a drugs test during the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.
"A hearing will take place on October 16," an official representing Turin prosecutor Raffaele Guariniello said.
Pyleva tested positive for the stimulant carphedon after winning a silver medal in the 15km individual biathlon in Turin.
The 32-year-old Russian, who won gold in the 10km pursuit at the Salt Lake City Games in 2002, was stripped of the silver medal and banned for two years.
Pyleva said she took the carphedon accidently as the substance was contained in medication she took for an ankle injury.
Doping is a criminal offence in Italy.
Comment 1 - 1 of 1
Olga Pyleva sustained a widely publicised ankle injury for which she had to take pain - killer medication where,as it appears, the banned substance was not listed amongst the ingredients. At the time of being banned at Turin even the IBU President urged her to consider action against those responsible for the omission - inference being that there were certain mitigating circumstances to consider. In the light of this I am surprised that the Italian authorities are pursuing this matter but hope that the truth will finally come out & she is exonerated from any accusation of deliberately seeking unfair advantage which, as the best in the world at the time, she didn't need !
Along with her many other fans we wish her all the best for the future.
