Wales name uncapped Fury for S.Africa tour

CARDIFF (Reuters) - Wales have included uncapped London Irish scrum-half Warren Fury for the tour to South Africa next month, but there was no place for veteran forward Colin Charvis.

Wales coach Warren Gatland has named 11 of the Grand Slam winning team in his 27-man squad for the two-Test tour against the world champions.

But he has also been forced to turn to uncapped scrum-half Fury following the loss of Six Nations winners Mike Phillips and Dwayne Peel.

Fury, 22, is only third choice at London Irish and played for both England School and England Under-19s but is well known to Gatland who signed him for the London Wasps academy four years ago.

Gareth Cooper, a British Lion in 2005, has also been included though may have to join the tour late if Gloucester reach the Premiership final while fellow back Andy Williams of Newport Gwent Dragons, who has yet to start a Test, is also in.

Gatland said: "We are aware that it's not the best preparation for such a pivotal position.

"The lack of experience in such a pivotal position is a big area of concern for us and that's why we have picked three scrum-halves. It's a position we have to look at with Mike and Dwayne both out for some time."

Wales are without seven of the Six Nations winning squad for their unofficial Battle of the Hemispheres against World Cup winners South Africa.

As well as Peel and Phillips, Gavin Henson, Martyn Williams, Lee Byrne and Robin Sowden-Taylor will all miss the tour through injury while Alix Popham is unavailable following his move to French club Brive.

Yet there was still no room for Colin Charvis, who set the world record for the number of Test tries by a forward against the Springboks last November, sparking speculation that he will retire this summer.

The 35-year-old was prevented by his region the Dragons from joining Wales for their training camp last week in Ireland, with Heineken Cup qualification still up for grabs and now that looks to have cost him the chance to add to his 94 caps.

Gatland said: "We didn't consider Colin. He wasn't involved in the Six Nations and we felt this was a chance to look at the future and develop some younger players.

"We've had a number of injuries but that means this tour is an opportunity for a number of young players. But we still feel we are able to field a strong starting 15 against the world champions."

Ryan Jones, who led Wales to the Grand Slam just two months ago, will again lead Wales while fellow British Lions Tom Shanklin, Gethin Jenkins, Stephen Jones and Six Nations player of the tournament Shane Williams are all included.

James Hook is favourite for the number 10 jersey while uncapped Ospreys centre Andrew Bishop and Cardiff Blues lock Bradley Davies will also travel while Llanelli wing Mark Jones faces a late fitness test following a groin operation.

Wales face South Africa in Bloemfontein on June 7 and Pretoria on June 14.
