Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal has pulled out of this week's Stuttgart Cup due to a knee injury.

TENNIS 2008 ATP Stuttgart Rafael Nadal - 0

"My doctors have said I need a couple of days rest. I will now get examined for an exact diagnosis," the Spaniard said in Stuttgart, adding he had a problem with his knee without providing any details.

"I only want to return to the court once I am 100 percent fit," the 22-year-old said.

Nadal, a four-time French Open champion, became the first Spaniard in more than four decades to win the Wimbledon men's singles title after defeating Roger Federer.

"It was amazing for me," said Nadal. "It was a very special victory for me winning against Roger and the most important thing [was] winning Wimbledon."

Asked what the victory meant to him, he said: "Right now I only think about the present.

"Probably when I finish my career, I am going to think about these things."

Nadal, who has twice won the Stuttgart Cup, said his immediate focus was to get some rest.

"My future plan is to relax. I played for the last four or five months without stopping.

"I need to recover. I have to work with my physio and work with my doctor."

  5. I believe Federer still the number 1. If he had won the final 2 games everyone would he hailing him stll. Surely 2 games at the final of a match can't turn everything on its head. If you had to put your money on some to beat anyone else at US Open would you really choose Rafa ahead of Roger. The only problem Federer has is in his head, as was shown by the first 2 sets in the final. Only on the verge of defeat, with his head sorted after the rain break did the real Federer show up. Federer is slightly past his best though. Both are fanatasic players. Whether or note Rafa's knees hold up in the long term he will still be remembered as one of the greats just as Lew Hoad is despite his back curtailing his career somewhat

  6. Yeah MVMUTHU1964 I thought I was seeing things this past tournament, but I think he has started to shed all that muscular mass. He doesn't need the weight.

  7. The way Nadal over-stretches himself, left-right and back-forth could be dangerous notwithstanding the fact he is young and his body might be supine. We have seen many a potential youthful potential players' careers curtailed. He could take a tip or two from Federer how to survive at the top for so long. For a starter, Nadal could progressively shed his muscular build and build athleticism like several of the other champion players, both present and past. Will he pay heed?.

  10. I agree with with Helen that it was nothing easy for Rafa. But it's good that he decided to get some rest.I am sure that his physio Maymo will help him a lot in his recovering.

  11. as i've said before, he's been going all out to prove his point, at some cost to his joints. the transition from clay to grass can't have been easy. i mean wimbledon and RG are only, what?, two weeks apart. it's always so abrupt, so stark to see the red clay on sunday, then the green (and red) of Queens the following morning. it's hardcourt time now all the way to Flushing and the surface is anything but friendly.
again, in one of my earlier posts, i must have drawn some frowns by saying it's got to be this year or his knees won't carry him. i'm sticking to my guns (and hoping i'm wrong). i don't want to see a meteor. he's got the drive to become much more. A second Federer? i doubt it. And honestly I wouldn't want to see anybody dominating for this long, so soon. But I do think Nadal deserves more than just to be known as "Federer's rival", "the man who snatched Federer's sixth Wimbledon".
    quote-unquote Cheers :)

  14. Mr. Nadal, a phone call would have been just as good!!! But he's a principled young man..so no less is expected of him.
That win really muust have taken a lot out of him. Hope the knee gets better soon. He has so much to offer the world of tennis...preferably on court.

  16. NADAL MUST TAKE REST UNTIL TORONTO MASTERS IF HE WANT TO DO BETTER AT BEJING & US OPEN , HE MUST RECHARGE ENERGY & HUNGER TO WIN.

  17. i was sure he was carrying an injury through out the latter stages of the competition and i am sure the fall in the final didnt help to much, this makes his win even more admirable ,admitedly the injury couldnt have been too serious or else he couldnt have performed so well but he was not moving as well as he can. i know that toni has repeatedly said that since last year rafa is carrying a potentially career ending knee injury but that rafa doesnt want to admit it, who knows what is really going on, i just hope he can sort it out because i fear that injury could be the most deciding factor in how rafa goes in the tennis world not talent which he has in abundance.
