Nadal closes gap on Federer

Mon 07 Jul, 05:14 PM

PARIS (AFP) - Rafael Nadal's epic final victory over Roger Federer at Wimbledon has seen him close the gap on the world number one to 545 points in the ATP rankings released on Monday.

The Spaniard could end the Swiss' stay at the top of the rankings, a position he has held for a record number of weeks since February 2004, before the end of the season.

Nadal, 22, only reached the fourth round of last year's US Open and a better performance this year would give him a rankings boost. Federer must win the event to defend the points he earned at Flushing Meadows last year.

Meanwhile, Britain's Andy Murray has climbed back into the top 10.

Murray moved up from 11th to ninth after reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, his best performance in a Grand Slam.

Murray had no ranking points to defend from this time last year, when he missed almost three months of the season with a wrist injury.

The ATP world rankings:-

1. Roger Federer (SUI) 6600

2. Rafael Nadal (ESP) 6055

3. Novak Djokovic (SRB) 4945

4. David Ferrer (ESP) 3045 (+1)

5. Nikolay Davydenko (RUS) 2970 (-1)

6. Andy Roddick (USA) 2065

7. David Nalbandian (ARG) 2030

8. James Blake (USA) 1975

9. Andy Murray (GBR) 1805 (+2)

10. Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI) 1760 (-1)

11. Nicolas Almagro (ESP) 1515 (+1)

12. Radek Stepanek (CZE) 1430 (+3)

13. Fernando Verdasco (ESP) 1375 (+5)

14. Fernando Gonzalez (CHI) 1365

15. Richard Gasquet (FRA) 1310 (-5)

16. Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) 1305 (+1)

17. Tommy Robredo (ESP) 1300 (+2)

  2. I think andy murray would not last 10 seconds at number 1 and nadal will be there until he retires

  3. Dear Dr. Tarek nadal is 1 of the few players to have walked this planet and could wipe the floor with you with his hands, legs tied and being lay down in a hospital bed and nearly dead

    Nadal=number 1

    From jrobbo.lfc, on Tue 29 Jul 12:01PM
  4. Nadal did not win a title between July 2007 when he won Stuttgart 2007 (No top ten player was there except him) and Montercarlo in April 2008. This is almost 10 months and if you skip this low key event it wilol be between Roland Garros and Next Monte carlo, i.e the whole perion between 2007 and 2008 Clay seasons, yet he did not lose the number 2 spot and I think that is fair because if what is now said about Federer and his days are over was said about him, how does Nadal successes these days fit in. My point is that the system is very fair and Nadal is the proof, not winning a major for a year did not mean that he was over and today is proof and so keeping no2 spot was fair as it is for Federer and according to what happened with nadal in that period, who knows, you might see federer winning all next year, a bad streak does not mean the end

  6. I remind every one that Nadal did not win a title for nearly a year while Federer won 2 GS and 2 master series and Master Cup, Djokovic won 1 Gs and 1 master series, Nalbandian won 2 Back to back master serirs and yet Nadal Remained no 2 the whole period, I guess the ranking system did not suck then

  7. I can't understand much ado about andy murry. british jornalism is all about jingoism-no real substance in what they write about their sports men. Jeremy Bate hated the british crowd as they are always a turn-off for their players. i agree murry isn't a fit sport person but given time things might improve. when nadal, federa and njokvic retires, he might come up. but note that for any player to perform to the pount of wining a slam, it is usually done within the first year of getting into the tour. take for instance sampras, roger federa, nadal, michael stich, becker, etc, they all won the slam at the pick of it. for murry, to get to this level, it has to be magic and not with his present standard. he can win atp tornament if he keeps up physically and show a little bit of humility. arogance can't get him anywhere as it stand, talking about british hope, i can understand why the fuss about murry. england sports men are all about money but no substance in what they do. get it write murry you can improve but you have to work 100% at all level. the crowd can't do it for you. talk to jeremy bate how he hated british crowd. he can give a tip on how to concentrate,

  8. Yeah, i agree, I have been thinking about this point too. Nadal won RG and Wimbledon and he is still number2. How come?!... And Queens, by the way, an yet Barcelona, Montecarlo..isn't he? It is a little strange he is still No2. Sur, i don't sau Roger stood and watch, but Nadal has avatage in front of him, these 2 biiiig tornaments, RG and W.

  9. The points system is fair and makes sense to me. Points are retained for 52 weeks and once a tournament is played points from the previous year are replaced by points won in the current year. This is why consistency and defence of points becomes important. Wiping the sheet clean every year does not give a true picture of performance. I feel one great period of results should not change things so drastically rather a player should be able to maintain this and reproduce it. That is who I think deserves to be the no. 1 player and that player is Federer right now.

From Safaa, on Fri 11 Jul 5:56AM
  10. Yeah and thatīs why the points system really SUCKS! Because itīs cumulative over the previous year!
If it was not based on that right now Federer would not longer be No 1 but maybe just No 3 or No5.
If he is not winning in 2008 as much as Nadal how comes he is No 1? That really sucks.
To Federer's die-hards fans: How can anybody out there consider federer still No1 when he will never be able to do what Nadal has achieved in winning the two most prestigious Grand Slams in a row RG and Wim in the same season let alone the US and the Australian?
Honestly I think it's pathetic Federer's not stripped yet of the No 1. Perhaps all major tournaments without distinction should add the same points per win provided that you keep scoring.
I think it's high time to break this ancient old fashioned points systems and get adjusted to our present modern times we are in the 21st century for Christ's sake if nobody in the ATP regulators has not noticed yet!
I hope this points system changes because it does not do justice at all. Just my humble opinion and fair point of view.
Yeah Federer can keep screwing up because No 1 is a guarantee for life even he is ill, has a bad year, cannot win major tournaments and so on but the rest must win their utmost. What a JOKE!
Anyway I agree with Becker 100%!

  11. I'm just wondering why Nadal after winning the French Open and Wimbledon isn't still on top. Whatever the ATP Rankings say I believe Nadal is the Best and his time is now. Spain must really be proud of him.

  13. This is a British website, so Andy Murray being at the centre of things is to be expected. In the US media, it is always about Andy Roddick, even though he has been disappointing for quite sometime. Not a lot of people heard about Daniel Nestor who won the Men's Doubles title at Wimbledon and completed a career grand slam, but he was main news here in Canada as he is a Canadian player.

  14. u people should take it easy with Andy murray, he is only trying to find his feet in the game so far, many are far better than him, yet i have not heard their name being publicised as murray, he is no 10 and his name is becoming popular than the no 1, if he eventually become world no 1, then authomatically the wimbedon city will be named after him or preferably the game of lawn tennis will be changed to his name. this is my own view of it all

  16. i wish people would shut up moaning about Andy Murray.he got to the semi-finals on his second wimbledon appearence, his best so far.so what he doesn't smile that often, who gives a f***.he does play good tennis and he his improving all the time.yes he isn't good as nadal yet!but he his alot better than tim henman(although i've nothing against tim,he did well as he could).he will get better over time,it just takes time and effort and the ability to ignore pricks like maric.

  17. When a Brit goes beyond the prelims of a tournament he or she is celebrated as if they won the tournament. I wonder what will happen when Andy Murray eventually gets to win the Wimbledon. May be he will be allowed to go home with the grass at the Centre Court of the All England Club. And until then, please can we hail Rafa, the Conqueror British hope!
